Support the LACC STEM Pathways Matching Funds Endowment This Holiday Season

"If it weren’t for LACC’s STEM Academy including its mentors, courses, professors and overall care, I would not be working in a STEM discipline and pursuing my doctorate in Electrical Engineering."
-Juliana H., Former LACC STEM student PhD, Electrical Engineering, UC Santa Cruz, June 2018

Dear LACC Alumni and Friends,

Would you like to support our economy through students like Juliana?
Here's Juliana's story:

Juliana H., Former LACC STEM student PhD, Electrical Engineering, UC Santa Cruz, June 2018Immigrant parents. No English. Labor jobs. Poor. “They [my parents] were always busy…they didn’t have time or energy to support my education…I had no guidance.” “Nobody ever pushed me to go to college.”

“Falling in love with Physics in my senior year of high school helped me realize the complexity of things around me.” Listening carefully to the vice principal at my high school where almost 90% of the freshman class dropped out, she told me: “you can still go to college, community college, then a 4-year university.”

Physics 101, taught by LACC STEM department chair Jayesh Bhakta, PhD led Juliana to her fascination with electromagnetism. Her final Physics course at LACC catalyzed her interest in Optics. “Dr. Bhakta encouraged me to direct a project involving Optics and Raman Spectroscopy.”

In 2016, LACC STEM Pathways Matching Funds Endowment was created to ensure sustainable support for students studying STEM disciplines at LACC. Every dollar raised for the Endowment will be matched 1:1 by the Department of Education. The resulting $2M Endowment will support areas of greatest need for the LACC STEM Academy.

Please support our economy through our students like Juliana who are the future leaders in STEM disciplines. Your support helps prepare students in STEM disciplines for our workforce. Please make your personal commitment now!

Please go to and DONATE NOW to the LACC
STEM Pathways Matching Funds Endowment OR choose another area of support for LACC and its students.

P.S. What was Juliana’s trajectory after graduating from LACC?

Researcher at Princeton University and New York University, BS from UC, Santa Cruz, worked at NASA, Luminetix. Inc., and Plantronics Company, Doctoral candidate in Electrical Engineering, UC, Santa Cruz, June 2018.
