News and Events for the week of July 2

This Week @ City

Good Monday Morning:

I wish for all of you and yours a restful and safe July 4th holiday! The campus will be closed this Wednesday.

I will be off on vacation for 10 days beginning Sunday, July 8th. You will not see this message for a couple of weeks until after I return. I will be back to campus on Wednesday, July 18th. You will see my weekly message return again on Monday, July 23rd.

Dr. Smith will be Acting President on Monday, July 9th and Tuesday, July 10th. Dr. Walden will be Acting President from Wednesday, July 11th through Tuesday, July 17th. I will be “disconnected” during my vacation; however, Dr. Smith and Dr. Walden will be able to reach me in case of a critical emergency.

We are Beginning to Get Some Green

No, not money, grass! The Facilities crew has been working diligently to repair our sprinkler systems all around campus so that we can turn our brown areas green. They laid sod on Heliotrope in front of Cesar Chavez. It looks great! They have repaired the water lines and will be changing out sprinkler heads in the grass area in front of the HFPA Communications building. You will soon see that area turning green again. In addition to “greening” the area, you will be seeing the pathway lighting in that same area again. There are some lights that need repair along those pathways and that will take place over the next several weeks, too.

Facilities has an ambitious plan this summer for deep cleaning classrooms and restrooms, stripping and waxing floors, repairing and updating areas, and getting rid of the weeds and cleaning out and planting as many areas as they can this summer throughout campus. When you see them out and about, tip your hat. They are bringing us back to a clean and beautiful campus.

Reliable Air Conditioning

One of the first complaints I heard when I arrived on campus in January was the problem with our air conditioning. I knew we had a central plant, but I learned it was not working properly. We brought on new HVAC staff who started to explore the issues. Then, once our new Director of College Facilities, Kahlil Harrington, started, he brought in additional experts to advise him of what could done in the immediate future to make the central plant deliver more reliable conditioned air. I am happy to let you know that LACC Facilities has worked with the LACCD District Facilities to bring in a special emergency project through deferred maintenance funds to get our central plant back running in an improved fashion. This work will take place this month and we hope to notice a difference in consistent temperatures in our classrooms before the end of July. For the long term, we have a bond project to permanently improve the central plant. That project will take several years to complete.

Full-Time Online Academy

The new LACC Online Academy has its first class close to filled. These students will begin their classes in August. There is still room and there is still time to enroll. If you know anyone who might be interested, the deadline to apply has been extended until July 16, 2018. Please share this link to apply:

Spend Summer in the City

Late start summer classes begin July 9. Check out our website for a complete list of open classes.

July 7 BBQ Fundraiser

Please mark your calendars for the LACCD BBQ Fundraiser which is being held on our campus! The event begins at 1pm in the Student Union 3rd Floor Multipurpose Room. Proceeds support LACCD’s nine Dream Resource Centers and DACA/Undocumented students. There are discounted tickets for faculty, staff and students. For tickets and more information, view the event in the campus calendar.

Faculty & Staff - Classified Professional Development Day

Our next Classified Professional Development Day will be Friday, July 27th, instead of July 20th. It will be all day long. We will begin with breakfast at 8am and we will provide lunch as well. All classified staff working that day will be reassigned to the Student Union 3rd Floor Multi-Purpose Room for the day. I believe you will find it interesting and fun! See you there.

Faculty & Staff - LACC Picnic Friday, August 10th at Noon

We are bringing back the LACC picnic. It will be held on Friday, August 10 at noon. Please plan to bring your family. The Management Team will be serving lunch to all of you. Unfortunately, it was too late for us to secure an off campus site that was practical. So we will dress up the Student Union and have the fun and games all around. We will send more details in mid-July.

Did you see the additional billboards with LACC advertising that went up last week? Metro train stations, such as Union Station, have a huge LACC sign, and rail cars have interior LACC advertising. Our name is out all over reminding everyone we are here for them. We are rebuilding our enrollment to show our community that LACC is their college and…the City’s college!

Have a great week,

Mary Gallagher
