News and Events for the week of March 11

Good Tuesday Morning:

I am sorry I am a day late getting this to you. We had a very successful LAUSD Counselor to College day yesterday. We also finalized the list of attendees for the Foundation Gala this evening. Those of you coming to the Gala, I will see you this evening.

As we enter our sixth week of Spring semester and we approach Spring break, we still have space in our late start classes that begin on April 8th, right after Spring Break. I know you are all preparing your mid-term exams, helping students finish paperwork for enrollment, and keeping the campus going. Spring Break is coming just in time for some well-needed rest.

Last Week
LACC was on NBC News

Last Thursday NBC News featured our Food Bank at 4:15pm and 5:30pm. If you missed it, here is the link to the story: https://www.nbclosangeles.com/news/local/LA-City-College-Provides-Students-With-Food-Bank-Each-Week_Los-Angeles-506853662.html

LACCD Board Meeting

Wednesday I attended the LACCD Board meeting at LA Trade Tech. They presented on the events they had for Black History Month. They do a historical bus tour of South Los Angeles every year. Perhaps we can join them next year. It is always very interesting. This year the focus of the tour was on the “redlining” that occurred in Los Angeles from the 1930s forward as African Americans moved from southern states to Los Angeles and the discrimination families faced when they moved to Los Angeles. That would be a very good topic of history for us to see and discuss.

Office of Civil Rights Training

Last Thursday, the Management Team and Counselors attended a mandatory training on harassment/discrimination of sex, race, national origin and disability provided by the Office for Civil Rights. We were informed about procedures and policies surrounding harassment and grievances resulting from harassment.

Procurement Training

Last Friday, we had a good number of staff, faculty and administrators who attended the procurement training delivered by the staff from LACCD Office of General Counsel – Anne Diga, the LACCD Contracts Manager – Jim Watson and our very own LACC Regional Procurement Specialist – Marcia Webb.
