News and Events for the week of May 6

Good Monday Morning:

As we enter the second week of May, our campus is buzzing with activity. Please mark your calendars for our graduation ceremony where we will be celebrating the achievements of the Class of 2019 on June 4 at 5pm at the amazing Greek Theatre. This week we will be providing a graduation newsletter to students with all of the information they will need for graduation.

LAST WEEK
  • For most of last week, Dr. Lancaster, Dr. Badaylan, Dr. Wanner and I attended the ACCJC accreditation training and information conference in San Francisco. It was good for us to see and hear the differences in our accreditation commission.
  • On Tuesday our Communication Studies Department hosted City Tales – Storytelling Event. Original stories around the theme of “Truth or Dare” were shared by students, alumni and faculty.
  • Also last Tuesday, April 30th the Visual and Media Arts Department hosted an Artist Lecture featuring photographer George Rodriguez. His photography exhibits have included film premieres, farm-worker strikes, album covers, celebrity portraits and civil rights marches.
  • Wednesday had our Cinema & TV department welcoming director and screenwriter Jennifer Lynch for their guest lecture series. Lynch has directed episodes of a variety of television series including The Walking Dead, American Horror Stories, The Last Ship, and Hawaii Five-0. She also wrote and directed feature films including Boxing Helena, Surveillance and Chained.
  • On Thursday our Department of Chemistry & Earth Sciences hosted UCLA Professor Hosea Nelson, Ph.D., for a lecture as part of their Chem City Seminars – from Community College to the Academy: Life Liberty, and the Pursuit of New Chemical Reactions.

And Now WHAT IS HAPPENING This Week…

Please be sure your students know that our Pop-up Food Pantry, located in front of the Student Union, usually is ready to distribute between 10:30am until around 12:30 pm, or until the food is gone. We are feeding over 2,000 each week on just these two days.

Student Workshop: Suicide Awareness

This student workshop will helps our students learn the difference between suicidal ideation and someone who is actively planning to harm themselves. Students become aware of the behavior of someone who is at risk for suicide and they learn how to communicate with and refer friends or family members to counseling professionals who can help them. This workshop will be held on Tuesday, May 7 at 12:30pm in the Student Union 2nd Floor Conference Room, hosted by the Life Skills Center/Health and Wellness. For more information, please contact Joe Exnowski (323) 953-4000 ext. 2274, email: exnowsjj@lacitycollege.edu.

Student Concert Series

Theatre Academy Presents Hot L Baltimore

The residents of a dilapidated old hotel, from which the “e” in the hotel sign is missing—hence the name, Hot L Baltimore, are contemplating an uncertain future after the hotel is condemned and scheduled for demolition. Their conversations and challenges play out in the lobby of what was once an elegant residence for the inhabitants who each have a very personal relationship to the Hotel Baltimore and to their neighbors living in it, making the upcoming demolition troubling and worrisome. See our Theatre Academy students in this play this Thursday, May 9; Friday, May 10 and Saturday May 11 at 7 pm with a matinee performance on Saturday, May 11 at 2 pm.  There are also shows next week.
