Hi everyone! The week is almost over!

Let’s start with the math joke from one of the episodes of The Simpsons. Square root of one equals to an imaginary number 'i'. Two raised to the third power is eight (which is pronounced similar to ate). Next, the symbol ∑ is the summation or sum (some) symbol. Lastly, we have the Greek letter π which is pronounced as pi (pie). So when put all these words together, we have “I ate some pie”.

Now, I want to tell you about the American Mathematical Association of Two-Year Colleges (AMATYC) competition. The contest happens every Fall and Spring Semester. The LACC Math Club, formed in Fall 2000, has been participating in this contest and has been ranked number one nationwide for four times.

The Math Club meetings are held every Friday from 9:30 am till 12:00 pm where students, with help of Dr. Anatoliy Nikolaychuk, solve AMATYC problems from previous years. After practicing for the test, Math Club members get to enjoy each other’s company with some pizza and refreshments.

If you are interested in joining Math Club, make sure to come on one of our Friday meetings and sign up for it.

For those who are interested in participating in this year’s AMATYC contest, it will take place on Friday, March 1st, 2019, at 10:00 am; however, every participant is required to show up 15 minutes early to fill out their personal information (similar to SAT/ACT information sheet). The competition is only one hour, 20 questions. So, keep in mind to come 15 minutes before the competition starts as there won’t be extra time for those who are late.

All students who are at least taking one college course at LACC are eligible to participate in the competition.

Some of the perks of taking part in this contest is that it looks really good on your college applications. LACC students who got top scores in the contest have transferred to UCLA, MIT, Cal Tech, etc.

Another reason why to compete in the AMATYC contest is if you get a high score on the test, you can get a letter of recommendation from Dr. Anatoliy Nikolaychuk.

Good luck in the AMATYC competition!
