News and Events for the week of February 10

Good Monday Morning:

Today is the start of the Spring semester! Please take the time to walk around campus today and assist any students who need directions or are looking for classes. As of Friday our enrollment was still up about 10% over last year. That is a lot of great work from all of you. Please send any students who need assistance to the Welcome Center. I am off campus today so you will be in the able hands of Dr. Lancaster if you need anything.

Welcome Week

Today begins Welcome Week on our campus. We have extended Student Services office hours (open this week from 8am to 7pm Monday through Thursday) and additional staff will be on hand in the Welcome Center. There are also “Express Counseling” resources, financial holds temporarily lifted, and free parking is available in all student lots. The ASG will be hosting Welcome Week parties at 10am Monday through Thursday with club previews from 10am to 2pm and games, music, free food, and prizes out in the LACC Main Quad.

Black History Month - African Drum Circle

The bookstore is open for book buy back from 9am to 2pm and 3pm to 6pm this week. Students can get up to 50% back on their textbooks. Bring your books to the LACC Cubstore in the Student Union Building.

Food for Thought Pop-Up Food Pantry

This week, we are distributing food today Monday 2/10 and Thursday 2/13  from 11am until 2pm. Have your students watch social media for notifications.

The Writers’ Block Writing Center for Students

Our new Writers’ Block Writing Center for all students opens today, 2/10. On 2/20, the new Writing Center will be hosting a welcome event for all staff, faculty and students from 12noon to 3pm. The new Writing Center is located across from the Mail Center in the Administration Building.

Counselor-to-College Summit

Last Monday we hosted LAUSD counselors of Local District Central for an update of what has been happening at Los Angeles City College. We received feedback from our local high school counselors and added two more high schools who were in attendance. That makes almost 50 high schools we are in this year. Great job from our Outreach Team!

GO Central City

Last Wednesday morning I visited a local elementary school to talk with the students about the importance of planning to go to college. It was an amazing event that included our local Superintendent Roberto Martinez, School Board Member Monica Garcia, and Cal State LA Pathways Leader Wendi Vaughn. We had a great time together with the students!

Upcoming 90th Anniversary Activities

On the afternoon of April 25, 2020 from 1pm to 3pm, LACC will host a conversation with Chancellor Block from UCLA, President Covino from Cal State LA and myself in recognition of all three public higher education systems in the City of Los Angeles starting at the same location. We will discuss the changes taking place in public higher education as a result of the rapidly changing environment, particularly in technology. “The 21st Public Higher Education Environment – a Conversation” is the topic.

At the end of the year, we will have another “Celebration of Us” the evening of Friday, June 5th. Then our finale will be our 90th graduation on Tuesday, June 9th at the Greek Theater at 5pm. I hope we fill the Greek!

LACC Community Corner

  • Last Monday afternoon I met with NexusEdge – a company who make modules for students to prepare to go out into the workforce.
  • On Friday we had our Spring Faculty Symposium. Dietetics prepared an amazing breakfast for us. I gave an update to the faculty of all the great work going on at LACC
  • On Friday, I presented at the UC-CSU-CC Intersegmental Conference on Student Basic Needs.
  • This coming week will be busy as well. On Tuesday, we will be meeting to plan the details of our April 25th event with UCLA and Cal State LA.
  • On Tuesday the LACC Management Team will debrief on how everything is going with the Spring 2020 semester start.
  • Also on Tuesday afternoon I will be meeting, along with Math Professors Lee and Wayne with Marshall High School’s Principal and math teachers regarding their high school math program.
  • Later on Tuesday afternoon I will be meeting with Dr. Kateb from the Society for Brain Mapping & Therapeutics to discuss possible partnering opportunities.
  • On Thursday we are having the team frpm UCLA-CESMII join us on campus for lunch and a further discussion of our upcoming partnership.
