News and Events for the week of February 18

Good Tuesday Morning:

I hope you all enjoyed your four-day weekend. As we enter our second week of Spring semester, classrooms are buzzing with students and our campus is full of activities. This Saturday 2/22 marks the first day of Saturday classes. This Saturday and next Saturday, February 29, the Admissions & Records and Financial Aid offices will be open extended hours from 9am to 1pm. Our Enrollment is still up over 5%.

Food for Thought Pop-Up Food Pantry

This week, we are distributing food on Thursday 2/20 from 11am until 2pm.

The Writers’ Block Writing Center for Students

Our new Writers’ Block Writing Center opened last week; and this Thursday (2/20) they will host a welcome event for all staff, faculty and students from 12noon to 3pm. The new Writing Center is located in AD 100, across from the Mail Center in the Administration Building.

Black History Month

On Thursday 2/20 the Genderversity and Multicultural Center will host a presentation by actor Bill Duke at 12:30pm in the Student Union Building, first floor.

On Tuesday 2/25 the Genderversity and Multicultural Center will host “Unleashing Youth Power to End Female Genital Mutilation” at 12:30pm in the Student Union Building, first floor.

On Wednesday 2/26 the Genderversity and Multicultural Center will host a presentation by Dr. Shaun Harper, executive director and founder of USC’s Race and Equity Center, at 12:30pm in the Student Union Building, first floor.

Voting Centers

All nine colleges of the Los Angeles Community College District (LACCD) will host new, multi-day Voting Centers in collaboration with the Los Angeles County Registrar of Voters for the March 3 Primary Elections. All LACCD students, faculty, staff and public are reminded that the deadline to register to vote for the March 3 Primary is no later than Tuesday, February 18, 2020. To determine your status as a registered voter, or to register/re-register, go to either of these sites: https://www.lavote.net/ or  https://www.sos.ca.gov/elections/cavoter

LACC will be hosting 11-day Voting Centers that will operate from Saturday, February 22 through March 3, 2020, including on Sundays. As long as you are registered to vote, you can vote at any polling place. So everyone plan to vote at LACC!

Upcoming 90th Anniversary Activities

On the afternoon of April 25, 2020 from 1pm to 3pm, LACC will host a panel discussion with Chancellor Block from UCLA, President Covino from Cal State LA and myself in recognition of all three public higher education systems in the City of Los Angeles starting at the same location. We will discuss the changes taking place in public higher education as a result of the rapidly changing environment, particularly in technology. “The 21st Public Higher Education Environment – a Conversation” is the topic. What we expect to do in this century; and what are the effects on the city of Los Angeles and its surrounding areas.”

At the end of the year, we will have another “Celebration of Us” the evening of Friday, June 5th. Then our finale will be our 90th graduation on Tuesday, June 9th at the Greek Theater at 5pm.

LACC Community Corner

Last Tuesday we began the detailed planning of our April 25th event with UCLA and Cal State LA. We spoke with representatives on Thursday to coordinate efforts.

Also last Thursday we met with the UCLA-CESMII team to further discuss our partnership.

This coming Thursday, I will be in Sacramento meeting with the Board of Registered Nursing (BRN) on the status of our program approval with the BRN.

Have a fabulous week!
