News and Events for the week of January 13

Good Monday Morning,

We are looking good for Spring with enrollment at 110% from last year, slightly above the overall District percentage of 107%. Winter appears to be healthy as well: we are up 126% over last year with the District average at 114%. Winter is much smaller than Spring, but the numbers are good.

A quick reminder that next Monday, January 20, the campus will be closed in honor of the Martin Luther King, Jr holiday.

90th Anniversary Celebrations

Our next 90th Anniversary event will take place on the afternoon of April 25th from 1:00 to 3:00. LACC will host a panel discuss on our campus with Chancellor Block from UCLA, President Covino from Cal State LA and me to have a conversation about “The Future of Public Higher Education in Los Angeles at a Birthplace of Public Higher Education in Los Angeles.” All three public higher education systems in the City of Los Angeles starting at the same location.

At the end of the year, we will have another "celebration of us" the evening of Friday, June 5th. Then our finale will be our 90th graduation on Tuesday, June 9th at the Greek Theater.

Food for Thought

This week our Food for Thought Pop Up Food Bank will take place today, January 13 and Thursday, January 16 in front of the Student Union. We are distributing food from approximately 11am until 2pm. Information on Food for Thought services can be found @lacitycollege on Instagram.

For Faculty & Staff - Classified Retreat

This Friday, January 17, we will have a classified retreat where the classified staff will be provided an update on enrollment, our budget and several initiatives we are working on. Please plan to attend from noon to 4:30pm, 3rd Floor Student Union.

LACC Community Corner
  • UCLA-CESMII (Clean Energy Smart Manufacturing Innovation Institute) – we had talk with the group again last week. They will be coming to campus this week to take a look the possible opportunities to locate their Institute at LACC. Stay tuned!
  • At the Chancellor’s Retreat last Thursday and Friday, we talked about enrollment targets for 2020-2021 and about equity. The Management Team has been working on year on strategies to improve equity throughout our organization. We heard two great speakers on equity. Much more to come on that front.
  • This week I will meet with UCLA-CESMII again and I will report our progress next week.
  • I am meeting this week also with the City Attorney Mike Feuer about their City programs.

As we start the second week of the winter term, we are off and running.
