LACC Music Academy (Applied Music)

Apply Here!

The Los Angeles City College Applied Music program provides private lessons to committed music students who are planning to transfer to a four-year institution as music majors. This culminates in a jury examination in front of a faculty jury panel, the type of process a student will face in entrance examinations to four-year schools and once they are part of the four-year curriculum.

Students are required to enroll in at least 12 units as a full-time music major with an identified transfer plan (see curriculum below).

The LACC Department of Music Applied Music faculty members are highly qualified and experienced professors and professional musicians who offer private instruction in instrumental and voice performances, as well as composition and music technology.

Applied Music students enroll in the Applied Music Lab (Music 180), Applied Music Master Class, and individual lessons (Music 181, 182, 183 or 184). The Applied Music Master Class is mandatory and is scheduled for one hour each week. Applied Music students also receive 16 half-hour private lessons for the entire semester.

The Applied Music Lab provides access for our Applied Music students to our practice rooms. Students are expected to practice 5 hours per week (a total of 90 hours per semester) at the LACC Department of Music facilities to receive credit for this course.

At the end of the semester, all Applied Music students are expected to perform in a jury examination.

In addition to Music 180 and 181/182/183/184, Applied Music students are expected to be full-time music majors and must enroll in the following courses:

Music 201 & 211 (217-2), or 202 & 212 (218-2), or 203 & 213 (219-2)

If these courses have been completed, students must take Music 121 or 122 and 221, 223 or 231.

Music 312, 313, 314 or 341-1/2/3

Applied piano & composition students must enroll in 341-1/2/3.
