CARES Distribution

The Higher Education Emergency Relief Fund authorized by the Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security Act (CARES Act), signed into law on March 27, 2020 and funds were distributed to institutions of higher education to address the disruptions caused by COVID-19.

Los Angeles City College has signed the Department of Education Certification and Agreement for receipt of the CARES Act. The college has been allocated $5,197,272 and is in receipt of $2,598,636 for distribution to students in direct aid. The college followed guidelines from the Department of Education.  Awards in the amount of $300 have been provided to all students meeting the following requirements:

  • Active for the spring semester
  • Pell eligible,
  • Not enrolled in exclusively online courses.

Direct aid is intended for students whose lives have been impacted by the coronavirus and must be used for expenses related to the disruptions due to the coronavirus, such as food, housing, course materials, technology, health care, and childcare expenses.

The college distributed $1,878,300 to 6261 students. Eligible students have received an email with information from the District Office with information on distribution through the student Bank Mobile account.

The college identified 304 students that met the following criteria

  • Currently enrolled students
  • Title IV Eligible
  • Members of disproportionately impacted populations such as Veterans, Foster Youth, and homeless students.

Additional awards of $300 were distributed to these students.  The sum of these amounts is $91,200.

The college distributed the remaining $629,136 to students to students enrolled in at least 3 units that had not already received any funds: 5865 students received $93; 900 students received $92.99

All students have received an email with information from the District Office with information on distribution through the student Bank Mobile account.

Based on the guidelines from the Department of Education, students must be eligible for Title IV financial aid and not be enrolled in exclusively online courses. LACC has approximately 5,432 students eligible for CARES Act funding.

LACC has prioritized those students with identified financial need. Awards in the amount of $300 have been provided to all students meeting the following requirements:

  • Active for the spring semester
  • Pell eligible,
  • Not enrolled in exclusively online courses.
