AMERICAN SOCIAL PROBLEMS (UC:CSU)

ADVISORY: Sociology 1. This course involves the identification and analysis of
contemporary social problems. It is concerned with problems in human relationships
and social institutions. Among the contemporary social problems studied in the
course are racism, sexism, crime, poverty, and family disorganization.

Speech 72 must also enroll in Speech 60B. DESCRIPTION: A level five course for
persons who use English as a second language. Stresses expanding vocabulary
utilizing the most common English words, their pronunciation and usage, along with
usage of idiomatic expression, figurative language, etc. Develops skills in listening.

ADVISORY: Speech 73 and Speech 60C and ESL 6A with a satisfactory grade or
appropriate placement score. DESCRIPTION: For speakers of English as a second
language. May be taken twice for credit. May NOT be taken concurrently with any
other Speech class. COREQUISITE: Students in Speech 113 must also enroll in
Speech 60D. DESCRIPTION: Stresses the speaking of standard American English,
including pronunciation, diacritics and/or phonetics, dictionary use, idiomatic
expressions, phraseology, rhythm, inflection, and vocabulary building.

certification requirements in Humanities. Stresses techniques of discovering
published authors’ meanings and expressing those meanings to an audience
