FUNDAMENTALS OF CHEMISTRY I                (UC:CSU) 

ADVISORY: Math 115 or one year of high school algebra.  Lecture 3 hours. Laboratory 4 hours. DESCRIPTION: Chemical phenomena, methodology, and theory are studied in the context of social, political, and economic issues. Fundamental chemical principles are developed and applied within the study of selected instructional modules, such as atmospheric gases, acid rain, nuclear fission, solar energy, drugs, and nutrition. The laboratory component gives students experience in the general procedures used by chemists and the uncertainty involved in operations. NOTE: Chemistry 51 does not satisfy the LACC pre-nursing Chemistry requirement.

PROGRAM REQUIREMENTS

§ Prerequisites and Co-requisites are electronically enforced at registration for all Child Development courses. Students entering the Child Development Certificate Program must be eligible for English 21/73 or have appropriate placement on the college assessment.  To receive your first certificate, you MUST complete English 28. See the Student Assistance Center for information and appointments for English assessment.

§ College to Careers Child Development entry level certificates are available. You may pick up applications in AD 200 or 300B.

CDTC

§ If you are currently working in a paid position in a licensed Early Childhood Program serving infants to kindergarten, or before and after school-age programs, and are taking Child Development or General Education units towards a Child Development Permit, you may qualify for partial reimbursement of your fees, books, or other expenses at LACC.  For information, ask for the Child Development Training Consortium in AD 200 or call  (323) 953-4000 ext. 2290 or AD 300B at ext. 2296.

TANF-CDC

•     If you are currently in the CalWORKs program and receiving TANF cash aid, you may qualify for our TANF-CDC (Temporary Assistance for Needy Families - Child Development Careers) cohort program. Students prepare to become an Associate Teacher or Teacher through the CA Child Development permit process. Student participants receive the following services: one-to-one education and career advisement, payment of books and tuition, bus passes, materials and supplies for your courses, free access to all department workshops, as well as TANF-CDC workshops such as resume writing, dress for success, CPR training, Play Power and much more. •     Planning Ahead For Your Career: Students planning careers working with young children will be required to complete the following prior to employment:

Please bring proof of your TB clearance to the first class.   In addition to the seminar class, students are required to complete a minimum of 90 hours TBA at an APPROVED field site. To be eligible for field placement, students MUST be available two days a week (3 hrs and 15 minutes on either MW or TTH or WF), either from 8:00am - 12:00 Noon OR 12:00 Noon - 4:00pm (limited number of placements available in the evening). CO-REQUISITE: English 21 or 73 or higher, or equivalent.   DESCRIPTION: Offered in the Spring Semester. This course presents the philosophy and methods related to working with young children and their families within a diverse society including ethnicity, language, culture, gender, age, social class and exceptionality. Curriculum development, problem solving techniques and environmental designs will be studied from an inclusive perspective.

ADVISORY: English 21 or 73 or equivalent. Verification of annual Mantoux test (or chest x-ray.) is required.   DESCRIPTION: Offered in the spring semester. An introduction to the study of programs for exceptional children and the inclusion of these children into educational settings as close to their typically developing peers as possible. A survey of disabilities from a child development perspective includes definition, characteristics and educational implications.

It is designed for those planning to work in before and after school child care.  Topics to be included will be guidance of children’s behavior, the child in context of family and community, and administration of programs.   NOTE: Students will complete 1 hour TBA each week observing, and/or participating in school age programs.

PREREQUISITE: Child Development 22 or 38 with a satisfactory grade or better or equivalent.   DESCRIPTION: This course satisfies the Child Development Permit, Master Teacher level adult supervision requirement and is designed for students who currently, or will supervise adults in an early childhood program.  Students compare methods and principles of supervision and mentoring as well as how to develop positive team relationships and utilize conflict resolution techniques.  Additional emphasis is placed on advocacy and professional development as well as special issues effecting ECE supervision.

CHILD DEVELOPMENT LAB II   (RPT  3)

DESCRIPTION: Students interested in continuing the Child Development Lab experience will focus on quality literacy experiences such as, exposure to age-appropriate literacy materials (modeling or practicing) library habits under the supervision of a literacy expert. Students will evaluate and analyze literacy materials, able to write activity plans, and create instructional materials that support emerging literacy. A $20.00 lab fee is required.
