American Cultures Department

INTRO The American Cultures Department believes course content relating to the life and history of Blacks and Chicanos to be a valid and necessary part of the curricula of institutions of higher education. The department uses an interdisciplinary approach in offering courses that are relevant to the experience of African Americans, Chicanos and others in America. The background of the instructors enables them to provide a stimulating experience.

The courses provide the student with a knowledge of the contributions of African Americans and Mexican Americans to the past and present development of the United States. The courses also help students become aware of the problems of representative communities, and assist the community in solving these problems.

Besides awareness, ethnic studies will help open the door for transfer to a four-year institution, a career in teaching and education, community services, government services, public relations, and human relations.
