Chemistry Department

Los Angeles City College Chemistry and Geophysical Sciences Department is dedicated to the success of all our students.   We offer our students the chance to excel by presenting the latest technology and information in both the lab and lecture settings, by creating a warm and open atmosphere for learning with dedicated faculty, and by investing in a community spirit through our extra-curricular activities.

The chemistry discipline offers the complete range of chemistry courses necessary to complete your program of study as well as an opportunity to obtain an AS degree in Chemistry.  For students interested in the Geosciences, we offer a variety of courses in earth science, geography, geology, meteorology, and oceanography.

Many of the courses satisfy the IGETC and CSU physical science requirement. Whether you are a science major on the fast track to becoming a chemist, geologist, engineer, doctor, nurse, or pharmacist or a non-science major looking to just fulfill your GE requirement, all of your chemistry and/or geophysical science courses can be completed here, day or night.

STATE-OF-THE-ART LABORATORIES

The Los Angeles City College Chemistry & Geophysical Sciences Department is currently developing a science building for Life Science, Chemistry, and Nursing & Dental Technology, scheduled for completion in 2009. The labs will be equipped with computer capabilities and offer the best teaching facility in the county. The upper level courses currently give students access to new instrumentation like the Anasazi EFT-60 NMR Spectrometer, FTIR, UV-Vis spectrometers, and Gas Chromatagram (GC). The department offers small classes with extensive instructor interaction.
