Orientation for English 28 (0418) will take place Monday, August 30th, and Wednesday September 1st from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. You must attend BOTH orientation sessions. If you do not attend both sessions, you will be dropped from the class. If you wish to add the class you must attend both sessions. Do not be late for the first session. Arrive early. The session will start promptly. Light refreshments will be provided.
Meet at CCW (Wilshire Center ESL Learning Center Computer Lab, 2nd floor)  CCW is at 3020 Wilshire Blvd. Take the subway to the Vermont/Wilshire station and then walk East a short distance to Wilshire/Westmoreland. 3020 is on the Southeast Corner. Underground parking is available with a student permit and should not be a problem between 4:30 and 5:00 p.m. Street parking can be tight. Do not park in the building's courtyard.
Please bring evidence that you are eligible to enroll in English 28. I will need to see a grade transcript that shows a passing grade for English 21/97. Or you can show me your placement test result. If you have met the course prerequisites at another college, please bring that evidence and proof of equivalency from an LA City College Counselor. I reserve the right to drop anyone, or not add anyone, who does not bring the above requested evidence.
In order to take this online class you will also need to demonstrate that you can type at 30+ WPM. You will be tested at your first orientation session. Use these two links below to help you brush up on your typing skills (You cannot be successful in an online course if you cannot type with accuracy and speed):
Pre-Class Reading Assignment: Read Bless Me Ultima by Rudolpho Anaya. Read this book once through as quickly as you can. Read it for your own personal enjoyment. During the orientation session, you will be asked to take an online quiz that will ask you questions about the novel's setting, characters, time frame, and plot. If you have read the book once, you should do well on this quiz. I will ask questions regarding information not normally found in such study guide helps as Cliff's Notes, Wikipedia, or other online study guides. It will be a multiple choice quiz. Do not obsess over the quiz. Just read the book and you will be fine.
The two session orientation will teach you to navigate the class website and introduce you to all of the kinds of assignments and tasks that you will need to be able to complete while in an online environment.
In order to be successful in this class, you should have 24/7 access to a computer that is online. It is possible, though more difficult for you, to take this class by using only the computers on campus in the labs or at the LACC library during the week and the LA CIty Public Libraries on the week-ends.
I look forward to meeting you at our first orientation.
