Photography Course Descriptions


  10 Beginning Photography (3) UC:CSU

UC limit with Art 502503; 700711 courses: maximum credit allowed, 12 units.

Recommended: Concurrent enrollment in Photography 28 and Art 201.

Explore basic principles of photography from the mechanical creation of the image with camera and film to enlarging the photograph for display, while applying the guidelines of composition, communication and self-expression. A 35mm camera is required.

Automatic cameras are OK, but they must have manual shutter speed and lens opening capability. Approximate supplies cost is $125. You must attend the first lecture meeting, or be replaced by students wishing to add. The first scheduled class is the first lecture meeting. DO NOT attend the first lab meeting. Labs will meet only after announced in lecture class.

Acceptable for Art 287 credit, CSULA.


1 Elementary Photography (6) CSU

Prerequisites: Photography 10 or 20 with "C" or better, or approval of Black & White portfolio of 10 to 15 prints, by instructor, which must be presented to the instructor during semester previous to semester of enrollment. All work in the portfolio, including processing, must be by student. Recommended: Concurrent enrollment in Photography 28 and Art 201 or 501.

The beginning course for Photography majors, with intensive training in all phases of professional techniques, emphasizing view camera operation, exposure and development control of film, printing for optimum technical and aesthetic values, basic lighting techniques, theory of photographic processes, and basic sensitometry.  Private darkroom areas, cameras (except 35mm), equipment and most chemistry is supplied.  Free use of computers with T1 high speed Internet connections is included.

Estimated material cost is approximately $225. Owning a professional level light meter is recommended. Owning medium format or 4x5 camera equipment is not essential.

Acceptable for Art 287 credit, CSULA.


3 Basic Commercial Fields (6) A

Prerequisite: Photography 1 with C or higher. Recommended: Art 209 or 103. Recommended concurrent enrollment in Photography 43 and Photography 28 or 33.

An intermediate course for General Photography majors. Lighting of commercial subjects, using artificial and available light, as well as electronic flash, is the primary emphasis, with various printing, design and conceptual problems, as they relate to commercial photography, are explored. Some of the subjects covered are print media illustration, still-life table top and metal and glass lighting techniques. The commercial format view camera (4x5) will be used extensively in conjunction with medium format cameras. Digital imaging for professional photography and the Internet is introduced.  Estimated material cost is approximately $300. Owning camera equipment is recommended, but not essential.


6 Advanced Commercial Photography (6) RPT 1 CSU

Prerequisites: Photography 3 with C or higher. Recommended: Art 409 or 604. Recommended concurrent enrollment with Photography 28 or 33.

Professional lighting techniques for commercial subjects is stressed, in conjunction with specialized assignments related to current commercial requirements and practices, including set construction, publication illustration, multiple printing, stroboscopic, and scale. Field trips to photographers' studios, printing plants, prop houses are made throughout the semester when possible. Estimated costs is approximately $300. Owning camera equipment is recommended, but not essential.


15 Fundamentals of Portraiture (3) CSU

Prerequisite: Photography 1 with a ''C'' or better. Recommended: Concurrent enrollment in Photography 28 and 42.

Lecture, 2 hours; laboratory, 3 hours.

This course offers a study of modern photographic lightings in portraiture, using professional cameras and lighting equipment. Lightings are demonstrated in relationship to head and shoulder, three quarter, and full length poses. Photographic films, exposure factors, developing techniques, and print display are presented. Lightings for weddings, family groups, and glamour portraits are studied.


17 Introduction to Color Photography (3) CSU

Prerequisite: Photography 10, 20 or equivalent with "C" or better.

Lecture, 2 hours; laboratory, 3 hours.

Students enrolled in this class will learn about color photography from its beginning to the present with new materials on the present market. Light and its characteristics are studied in order to better understand perception and the individual's interpretation of color. Exposure factors related to color photography are studied as well as leading color films and Ektacolor printing. Estimated cost is $100.

20 Beginning Photojournalism (4) CSU

Recommended: Concurrent enrollment in Photography 28.

Lecture, 2 hours; laboratory, 6 hours to be arranged.

Photography for those interested in becoming photographers for publications (magazines, wire services, newspapers, in-plant publications, et al). Provides student instruction, practice and application, with cameras, shooting, procedures, dark room processing and photojournalism methods.


21 News Photography (4) RPT 3 CSU

Prerequisite: Photography 10 or 20 or equivalent.

Credit allowed for only one of Photography 21 or Journalism 221.

Lecture, 2 hours; laboratory, 6 hours to be arranged.

Emphasizes composition of news and feature pictures for use in mass communication media. Use of the photograph as an art form in telling the story, familiarity with the cameras used for news photography, and procedures and techniques in darkroom processing.


22 Creative PhotoVision (3) RPT 2 A

Prerequisite: Photography 1 with "C" or higher.

Lecture, 1 hour; laboratory, 5 hours.

This course is designed to increase the sensitivity of seeing, and constructing photographic images using non traditional and standard creative approaches.


28 Laboratory Processes (1) RPT 3

Prerequisites: Concurrent enrollment in other LACC Photography classes.

Laboratory, 3 hours.

This course is designed for the photography student who wishes to increase laboratory skills, relative to concurrent photography classes, through extended contact with equipment and faculty.

Students will not be permitted to use any of the photo lab facilities if they drop or are excluded from the main photo lecture section.


33 Advanced Laboratory Processes (1) RPT 3

Prerequisite: Concurrent enrollment in other LACC Photography classes and completion of three semesters of Photo 28.

Laboratory, 3 hours.

This course will concentrate on lab instruction designed to familiarize students with safety factors and the technology of film and paper processes. Students will not be permitted to use any of the photo lab facilities if they drop or are excluded from the main photo lecture section.


42 Printing Color Negatives (6) A

Prerequisite: Photography 10 or 17 with a minimum grade of "A" or completion of Photography 1 or 41 with a minimum grade of "C" or permission of instructor. Recommended concurrent enrollment with Photography 28.

Lecture, 3 hours; laboratory, 9 hours.

An introductory color course which develops a technical proficiency and an aesthetic awareness of the creative uses of color photography, including color design theory, composition, perceptual and psychological aspects of color. Emphasis is placed on negative to positive printing, developing the ability to choose material, light, expose and process 4x5 color negatives and produce up to 16x20 color prints. Assignments for the freelance photographer include scenic, portraiture, commercial and advertising. Cost of materials approximately $200.


43 Advanced Color Technology (6) A

Prerequisite: Photography 42 with minimum grade of "C". Recommended concurrent enrollment with Photography 3 or Photography 6.

Lecture, 3 hours; laboratory, 9 hours.

An advanced course for Color Photography majors interested in a photographic career in advertising, commercial, illustration, fine arts, or working as a laboratory technician. This course develops the ability to expose, color correct and process Ektachrome films and concentrate on a critical evaluation of the color reproduction. Students ultimately will be expected to choose the proper process for solving specific technical problems. Assignments include exposure, color correction and processing of Ektachrome, duplicate transparencies, internegatives, Vericolor print film, Duratrans, Ektachrome and Ilfochrome (Cibachrome) prints. Cost of materials is approximately $200.


44 Photography Decor (Creative Photography) (6) A

Prerequisite: Photography 43 with a minimum grade of C. Recommended concurrent enrollment with an advanced Black and White Photography class.

Lecture, 2 hours; laboratory, 10 hours.

An advanced color course designed to expand students perceptions and views of contemporary photography as an expressive form of communication. It stresses creativity in concepts and current techniques used as a design tool for freelance photographers. Photographic images are created with unusual sizes, shapes and materials, using both normal and specialized processes. Cost of materials is approximately $200.


46 Photographic Digital Imaging (6) UC:CSU

Prerequisite: Photography 3 and Photography 44 with a grade of "C" or better.

Lecture, 3 hours; laboratory, 9 hours.

This digital imaging course will incorporate the use of computers and photo digital software to alter, enhance and create new images that can be outputted to film and the print media.


49 Advanced Photographic Digital Imaging (6) UC:CSU 

Prerequisite: Photography 46 a grade of "C" or higher, or permission of instructor.

Lecture, 3 hours; laboratory, 9 hours.

This is an advanced digital imaging course that incorporates the use of computers, photo digital software and scanners to alter, enhance and create new images than can be outputted to film and print media.


50 Specialty Fields (3) RPT 3 A

Prerequisite: Photography 6 with a "C'' or better, or Photography 41, 42, 43, and 44, or Instructor's approval of advanced level portfolio.

Laboratory, 9 hours.

Students who have not had Photography at LACC must use their own laboratory, studio and camera facilities. This is a Directed Study class in which advanced students may investigate and explore specialized areas of interest outside of the classroom environment. This specialty is designed for advanced students as a vehicle for concentrated work toward a strong portfolio. Each student decides upon a project for the semester and works with the instructor through individual and/or group meetings for discussion and critique. Students enrolling in black and white photography Specialty Fields must have completed Photography 6 with a "C" grade or better and an additional 12 units of photography classes. Students enrolling in color photography specialty fields must have completed Photography 41, 42, 43, and 44.
