AA-T in MUSIC (Pending state approval)

(Music Associate in Arts Degree for Transfer)

The AA-T Degree in Music prepares students for transfer to California State University campuses that offer bachelor's degrees in Music. Ed Code Section 66746-66749 states that students earning the Music AA-T Degree will be granted priority for admission as a Music major to a local CSU, as determined by the CSU campus to which the student applies. This degree requires students to complete 60 CSU transferable units including completion of CSU GE or IGETC and 22 units in the major. Title 5 requires that students earn a grade of "C" or better to receive credit for coursework.

The faculty wants to communicate their belief that students should also complete Music Appreciation (MUS 111 – 3 units), Music History & Literature I/II (MUS 121/122 – 3 units each) and/or Introduction to Electronic Music (MUS 161 – 3 units). Faculty also recommends that students take Piano I-IV (MUS 311-314) to prepare for the piano keyboard proficiency exam given at the CSU. In order to be considered a Music major at LACC, including being eligible for department scholarships and awards, students also must enroll in Current Musical Events (MUS 152-1, 152-2, 152-3, 152-4).

Students not admitted to the Applied Music Program by audition are required to take instrumental or vocal instruction each semester in their area of specialty (1-2 units each) in addition to enrolling in and attending Music 181-4. These students will still be required to perform a performance jury at the end of each semester to pass the Applied Music class.

Students admitted to the Applied Music Program (Music 181-4) by audition are expected to enroll in Music 180 each semester (Applied Music Lab – 1.5 units).
