Jerry and Carol Goldsmith Music Scholarship

Intended Purpose For music majors with exceptional musical performance talent.

Amount Awarded $500. Winner performs on the Honor’s Program

  • Must demonstrate musical abilities at an audition before a panel of judges

    Name of Scholarship

    Abe Robyn Guitar Scholarship

    Intended Purpose Established by Mr. Abe Robyn to recognize and reward outstanding efforts and accomplishments of LACC guitar students. It is intended that this scholarship be awarded to students whose primary emphasis is on the classical guitar, its technique, repertoire and promotion.
    Semester Awarded Once yearly
    Amount Awarded $200.00
    Criteria for Applying
  • Demonstration of outstanding development in technical and interpretive skills reflected in the student’s guitar performance 
  • Completion of at least two semesters of guitar related courses at LACC 
  • Enrolled in a third guitar related course the time of the award 
  • A minimum of 3.0 GPA in all guitar courses 
  • Requirements to Apply
  • Students must demonstrate outstanding progressive development in technical and interpretive skills reflected in their guitar performance 
  • If more than one student is recommended, an audition may be required 
  • Applicants must have a strong drive for achievement and give evidence of cooperation, leadership and contribution to Department activities 
  • A student may receive this scholarship only once 
  • The award may be shared by two guitarists

    Name of Scholarship

    David A. Alpert Scholarships

    Intended Purpose The David A. Alpert Scholarship was established to recognize and reward either incoming or current first semester music students with exceptional musical performance talent. The recipients of the scholarships shall be known as an Alpert Scholars.
    Semester Awarded Once yearly
    Amount Awarded $2,000 for the winner and $500 for the runner-up
    Criteria for Applying
  • Either an incoming or a current first semester music major at LACC
  • Letter of recommendation from current music teacher
  • Demonstration of musical abilities by an in-person audition before a panel of judges
  • Requirements to Apply
  • A strong drive for achievement and evidence of cooperation, leadership and contribution to Music Department activities
  • If selected as the audition winner or runner-up, the student is known as the Alpert Scholar and must be enrolled as a Full-time music major as defined by the Music Department in the two semesters following the granting of the award and maintain an overall GPA in all music subjects of not less than 3.0

    Name of Scholarship

    Elizabeth R. Mayer Memorial Scholarship

    Intended Purpose The Elizabeth R. Mayer Memorial Scholarship is to be awarded to a LACC student whose primary musical emphasis is either piano or chamber music instruments, and who exhibits a strong desire for achievement and gives evidence of cooperation, leadership and contribution to Music Department activities.

    Criteria for Applying
  • Currently a Music Major at LACC at the time of the award
  • Enrollment in at least two of the following classes at the time of the award; Music 313, 314, 351, 361, 705, 725
  • At least one semester of part- or full-time attendance at LACC prior to receiving the award
  • At least a 3.0 GPA
  • Requirements to Apply If a student has been exempted by the Music Chairman from the full requirements, the student must be taking at least 6 units of the requirements during the semester of the award. The winner is selected by an auditions committee.

    Dr. Glynn T. Settle Scholarship

    Intended Purpose The Dr. Glynn T. Settle Scholarship was established in 1990 as a memorial to Dr. Glynn T. Settle.
    Semester Awarded Twice yearly

    Criteria for Applying
  • A Music Major at LACC at the time of the award
  • At least a 3.0 GPA in all units completed at LACC (If a student possesses extraordinary musical ability, the GPA may be reduced to 2.5)
  • Qualification for Campus Financial Aid
  • Completion of at least 12 course units at LACC

    Jazz Band Scholarship

    Intended Purpose The LACC Jazz Band Scholarship was established to provide at least one $100 scholarship, but no more than two, each semester to an instrumental jazz student who needs financial help and who exhibits a strong desire for achievement.

  • Enrollment in at least one Jazz-related class
  • Enrollment in a minimum of 6 units in Music at the time of the award
  • At least one previous semester of part- or full-time attendance at LACC prior to winning the award
  • Requirements to Apply
  • The scholarship is awarded to a student who possesses a love for the particular instrument(s) and who works hard to improve his/her level of competence in Jazz. Although the essence of this award is dedication and effort, nothing in the above is intended to exclude full-time or academically proficient students.
  • A student may receive this award more than once. The winner is selected by a committee of full-time music faculty.

    Leslie P. Clausen Scholarship

    Intended Purpose Created by a cash gift from Mr. & Mrs. Leslie P. Clausen on December 30, 1974 to reward needy students who possess superior musical talent and achievement.

    Amount Awarded $100.00
    Criteria for Applying
  • A music major as defined by the Music Department at LACC the semester of the award
  • At least one previous semester as a full-time student at LACC prior to winning the award
  • Enrollment in a music curriculum leading to an AA degree
  • Enrollment in an average of at least one General Education course per semester since the first semester (excluding P.E. and health)
  • Must be a full-time LACC student the semester following the granting of the award
  • Demonstration of financial need
  • An excellent performer or composer
  • At least a 3.0 GPA in all subjects 3.0; at least a 3.2 GPA in all music subjects
  • A strong drive for achievement and evidence of cooperation, leadership, and contribution to Music Department activities

    Lorraine Wyler Music Scholarship Award for Women: Most Improved Student

    Semester Awarded Once yearly
    Amount Awarded $1000.00
    Criteria for Applying
  • Be a female student at LACC who is currently a music major as defined by the Music Department, enrolled in Harmony, Musicianship, Keyboard Harmony, Piano, Current Musical Events, and a Performing Organization (unless exempted by the Department Chair)
  • Be at least a fourth semester student needing 12 units or fewer after the present semester to complete all LACC requirements for the Music Major (see LACC Catalog pages 138-139) including GE courses (two semesters of requirements from another college may have been transferred in to LACC Admissions Office)
  • Have completed 10 units or more in at least two semesters
  • Have a GPA in all music subjects of 3.0 or greater and/or have outstanding musical ability
  • Have a GPA in all subjects other than music of 2.75 or greater
  • Has shown the greatest improvement on her instrument or voice during the two or more semesters she has been a Music Major at LACC (as determined by a committee of three Music Department faculty and the Department Chair)
  • Is planning to transfer to a 4-year college or university as a Music Major
  • Has attached a typewritten, personal essay to this application describing why she wants the award, why she deserves the award, and describing her goals in music.

    Marion Suovanen Classical Guitar Scholarship

    Intended Purpose The Marion Suovanen Memorial Scholarship has been established by Mr. Elmer Suovanen to perpetuate his wife’s love of the classical guitar and to encourage, promote and recognize efforts and accomplishments of LACC classical guitar students.

  • Must have completed at least one semester of a classical guitar related course at LACC
  • A minimum 3.0 GPA in all guitar courses
  • Enrolled in a second guitar related course at the time of the award

  • Winner shall be selected by the LACC Music Scholarship Selection Committee

    Robert V. Altheuser Scholarship

    Intended Purpose The Robert V. Altheuser Scholarship was established to recognize and award a music student with outstanding efforts and accomplishments in the choral/ vocal abilities in classical or commercial music.

  • A full-time student as defined by the college
  • A music major as defined by the Music Department at LACC the semester of the award
  • At least one semester of full-time residence at LACC prior to winning the award
  • Enrollment in a music curriculum leading to an AA degree
  • Enrollment in an average of one General Education course each semester
  • Enrollment in at least one choral ensemble and one voice class the semester of the award, maintaining an exemplary status in both courses
  • An overall GPA of 3.0 or better with no grade less than "B" in any voice or choral class
  • Requirements to Apply Selection by a panel of full-time music faculty

    Wilkinson Music Scholarship

    Intended Purpose This scholarship was created in memory of Robert E. Wilkinson (1925-2000), professor of music at LACC for over 38 years. Bob was also Dean of Student Activities, Dean of Academic Affairs, and a member of the Foundation Board of Directors.

    Intended Purpose The William D. Kevany Scholarship was established to provide financial support to a LACC student whose primary musical emphasis is instrumental. It is the intention of this scholarship to reward that student who shall possess not only musical talent, but who also exhibits a strong desire for achievement.
