JPMorgan Chase Foundation
We are deeply grateful to the JPMorgan Chase Foundation for the generous support that enabled us to create the STEM Academy. The collaboration between the Mathematics/Computer Science, Chemistry/Earth Sciences, Physics/Engineering, and Life Science departments educates more than 10,000 students each year, including a large proportion of underrepresented minorities and women. We are honored that the leadership at JPMorgan Chase Foundation shared our vision for bringing a dedicated STEM concentration to LACC’s campus.
The Los Angeles City College Foundation has supported LACC STEM faculty members in searching for private grant funding for initiatives that benefit STEM majors including STEM Academy members. The LACC Foundation has also been providing oversight for the use of our funds from JP Morgan Chase Foundation and has assisted us in the search for additional funding. Donations to the STEM Academy can be made through this page on the LACC Foundation site.
LACC Office of Economic Development & Workforce Education
Workforce has partnered with the STEM Academy to include our members in the hackathon at their Hi-Tech launch. The STEM Academy director, Jocelyn Graf, and the faculty advisor, Jayesh Bhakta, have advised LACC Linked Learning partner high schools on their medical and engineering pathways. Workforce has also provided staff support for our STEM Academic Conference, including recruitment of student presenters from the Career Technical Education (CTE) departments on campus.
LACC Community Services Extension
The LACC Community Services Extension program offers not-for-credit courses to the community. Several STEM Academy members have been teaching Community Services courses on STEM-related subjects, such as MS Excel, 3D Printing, Computer Repair, and Programming for Kids. The STEM Academy also provided space in our Learning Center during the summer for the Community Services STrEaM (STEM + reading + arts) Camp for elementary and middle school students. STEM Academy members provided STEM-related instruction to compliment a music video-making project led by Community Services instructors and LACC Cinema & Television Department faculty member Linda Beal. A new group of STEM Academy members is collaborating with the STrEaM Camp weekend sessions during the school year, with a focus on robots. Through our partnership, our members have gained well-paying jobs that allow them to develop marketable skills.
Community Services is also sharing the costs of a 12-station dual-boot Mac lab for the STEM Academy Resource Room (FH-306). Our members will have access to the lab Monday-Thursday when classes are in session. On Fridays and Saturdays, Community Services will use the lab for its courses, many of which will be taught by our members.
LACC English Department Book Program
The LACC Book Program is focusing on STEM-related topics this academic year. The Book Program and the STEM Academy have jointly sponsored a visit by a guest speaker from the Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL).
California State University Los Angeles Bioinformatics Program
The director of the CSULA Bioinformatics Minor Program, Professor Jamil Momand, presented a workshop to STEM Academy members in Spring 2014. He is also helping to connect our member students with internships in companies where CSULA Bioinformatics alumni work through a joint online social networking group.
City of Los Angeles Information Technology Agency
STEM Academy members have been invited to work as volunteer interns in the fabrication lab of Communication Services of the City of Los Angeles, which produces custom parts and equipment for the Los Angeles Police and Fire Departments. One of our fabrication lab supervisors has been learning to use the City's equipment with the goal of developing a curriculum for STEM Academy members who wish to develop the skills to qualify for the City's fabrication lab by practicing in the LACC fabrication lab.
The STEM Academy Data Analytics Team has also partnered with another division of the City's IT Agency, focusing on the City of LA Open Data Initiative.
Red Dragon Cafe
This coffee shop and community space across from campus has invited our members and their guests to gather on Sundays for tutoring and study.
YMCA of Metropolitan Los Angeles
STEM Academy members have been invited to lead STEM-related educational activities for children at Los Angeles-area YMCA summer camps.
