The Cubs picked up a win against Compton but dropped two other games last week.
LA City lost to South Coast Conference leader Cerritos College, 7-2 (April 16), despite an outstanding pitching performance from Cub sophomore Christian Martinez (Los Angeles HS). The win kept Cerritos (24-13, 15-3 SCC) in first place.
The first three innings were scoreless before Cerritos earned its first run in the top of the fourth inning. The Cubs scored two runs in the fifth inning but Cerritos countered with two runs of their own to make the score 3-2 entering the sixth inning. The Falcons then powered ahead with runs in each of the remaining four innings.
“It was a defensive breakdown,” sighed Cub coach George Hinshaw. “I thought Christian was getting the job done but our fielding was far from acceptable. That was the key difference in the game.”
The Cubs next faced Compton College in a two-day pair of “away” games where the Tartars claimed victory in the first contest, 14-6 (April 18).
LA City, however, pounced back the following day with a 16-9 drubbing of the Tartars. (April 19). Freshman outfielder Eric Smalling (Pasadena HS) had his best game of the year with a “grand slam” home run and five RBI’s. Catcher Jerry Rodriguez also pounded a two-run homer besides stellar play behind the plate.
Freshman utility player Issac Alonso (Warren HS) also played well with four RBI’s. Outfielder Chris Espinosa (Fairfax HS) embraced the number “3” as he recorded three hits, three RBI’s, and three stolen bases.
LA City’s record improved to 8-26 overall and 3-15 in the South Coast Conference.
