January 3, 2008

LA City came away with two victories during the Christmas holidays in the eight-team College of the Desert Holiday Tournament held Dec. 27-29 in Palm Desert.

Dec. 27

Opening opponent Palomar College proved most capable against the Cubs. Poor shooting and excessive turnovers plagued LA City and greatly contributed to their nine point halftime deficit, 52-43. Although the Cubs second half play improved, it wasn’t enough to catch the Comets.

Freshman guard Scott Sterling (6-3, Bronx Regional HS, NY) led all scorers with a season high 27 points. Fellow frosh forward Travis George (6-9, Boston, MA) added inside strength behind 15 points and eight rebounds.

LA City held a 33-32 advantage at halftime and managed to keep momentum in the closing minutes of the game to capture their 12th victory of the season.

Sterling, again, led the Cub attack with 15 points, six assists, and five rebounds. George followed with 13 points and four rebounds.

LA City 57 v. Saddleback College 42
Dec. 29

The Cubs and Gauchos eventually find themselves locked in a tight game at some point of any season but seldom this early. The Cubs lost to Saddleback during the second round of the State Play-off’s last year and vowed revenge. They received it.

LA City’s relentless man-to-man pressure stymied the Gauchos who only scored 18 first half points compared to LACC’s 27. Cubs pressure eventually built an 18 point lead midway through the second half.

George recorded his third consecutive double-digit scoring game with 13 points, four rebounds, and four blocked shots. Sophomore forward Ricky Boyles (6-7, Washington Prep) recorded a season high 15 rebounds alongside seven points and three blocked shots. George’s efforts didn’t go unnoticed as he was named to the All-Tournament Team by opposing coaches.
