Cubs Slip Past Cerritos

January 8, 2008

LA City 76 @. Cerritos College 72
Fri. Jan. 4

The Cubs survived a highly physical South Coast Conference interdivisional contest last Friday in defeating Cerritos College, 76-72. The Cubs season record improved to 14-4.

The first half was strictly give and take with neither team establishing an advantage. A late basket in the first half gave the Falcons (8-10) a two point halftime margin, 35-33.

The second half start was fast and furious with LA City building a 10-point lead, 55-45, with 11:18 left in the second half. Cerritos surged back to within three points, 62-59, with 5:12 remaining. A steal by Cerritos guard Wayne Chapman and a subsequent basket by guard Van Girard moved the Falcons to within one point, 64-63, on their next possession.

However, Cub freshman point guard Branden Fisher (Genesis Prep, Miss. / Chicago) struck back with a three-pointer and 6-7 sophomore forward Ricky Boyles (Washington Prep) followed with a pair of free throws to push the Cubs ahead by six points, 69-63, with 2:47 remaining.

A five-point Cerritos turnaround with less than a minute to play shortened LACC’s lead to five points, 75-70. Fisher was called for traveling with 19.4-seconds giving Chapman time to drive to the basket for a lay-up. However, he missed the shot and the Cubs tenacious interior rebounding in the final seconds gave them a hard earned victory.

Fisher led all scorers with 20 points on 8-for-14 from the field including 2-for-3 from the three-point line.

Frosh forward Travis George (6-9, Boston, MA) added 16 points, nine rebounds, five assists, and five blocked shots. Freshman 6-3 guard Scott Sterling (Bronx Regional HS, NY) chipped in 10 points alongside three assists. Sophomore 2007 All-Conference guard Eric Nelson (Hamilton HS) added 15 points on 6-for-11 from the floor and four assists.
