Cubs Topple El Camino

In a premier match-up of highly rated California community college men’s basketball teams, the Cubs (16-4) prevailed over an assertive, physical El Camino team, 67-61.

Both teams parlayed for position in the first half with El Camino (14-5) leading by five points at half time, 36-31.

An inspired second half of defense by the Cubs and near domination in rebounding erased El Camino’s lead within three minutes and propelled the Cubs to their 15th win of the season. LA City held El Camino to 26 percent shooting in the second half (7-26) while shutting down ECC’s powerful three-point scoring attack to 0-5 from behind the arc.

Sophomore 2007 All-Conference guard Eric Nelson (Hamilton HS) led the Cub attack with 14 points. Sophomore power forward Diego Belizario (6-8, Sao Paulo, Brazil) earned a “double-double” behind 12 points and 11 rebounds. Fellow sophomore forward Ricky Boyles (6-7, Washington Prep) followed close behind with 11 points and eight rebounds. Boyles also was credited with two blocked shots.

LA City 79 v. LA Harbor College 48

Fresh off a big victory against El Camino, the Cubs kept rolling to their 16th win of the season at the expense of LA Harbor College.

LA Harbor was able to stay with the Cubs for the first couple of minutes and a tied score of 8-to-8 before LA City began pulling away enroute to an 11 point half time lead, 32-21.

The Cubs pounced on LA Harbor early in the second half and never looked back in holding the visitors to 29 percent from the field and controlling the boards, 48-22.

Freshman point guard Branden Fisher (Genesis Prep, Miss. / Chicago) led Cub scorers with 20 points on 7-for-12 from the floor. He also passed for seven assists.

Belizario powered his way to 17 points, seven rebounds, and four assists. Freshman guard Scott Sterling (Bronx Regional HS, NY) added 10 points.
