meet the coaching staff
|Meet The Coaching Staff|
New Coach Derrick Jackson is working to turn the Los Angeles City College women’s basketball team into a winner and eventually match the unparalleled success of the men’s program. Jackson spent last season coaching at Artesia High School, but his background is much deeper than that. He coached at Los Angeles Harbor College for two seasons and has worked numerous major college preseason camps for USC and the University of Idaho.
Jackson has been in Los Angeles for only seven years, having moved here from Dallas. Besides coaching, he has also worked as a social worker but is strictly coaching these days. His coaching resume includes stints at Wilma Hutchins High School in Dallas and Midland Junior College in Texas.
A community college product, he was an all-conference guard at South Plains Junior College in Leveland, Texas. He transferred to Mid America University in Olathe, Kan., where he played point guard. At Kimvall High School in Dallas he made the all-district team and played against future NBA stars Spudd Webb, A.C. Law (Atlanta Hawks) and Quinten Ross (Memphis Grizzlies).
Though the Cubs won only three games last season, Jackson is looking forward to a huge turnaround and says the team’s goal is to make the playoffs. “We want to make it to the playoffs and then do some damage,” Jackson says. “Once you get in there, the hottest team gets on a roll and comes out on top. I can see us going a long way.”
The players, which include three transfers, are on the same page as their new coach, Jackson says. “They’re really excited and working hard to getting it going. We’re putting in a lot of things and they’re doing a good job of picking it up very quickly.”
Working with Jackson are assistant coaches Leon Henry and Lucius Franklin.
