Checking In With The Lady Cubs

Nov. 6, 2007

The Lady Cubs prepared for a different type of course but the southern California wildfires altered everyone’s preparations. The SoCal Regionals were originally scheduled in Irvine before poor air quality forced a venue change to Mt. San Antonio College, in Walnut. Mt. SAC’s multi-elevated, hilly course took its toll on all teams, but LA City still finished 24th out of 41 team entries.

Glendale College was the SoCal Regional winner while placing two of their runners among the top-five finishers and a team time of 1:35:29. Orange Coast College’s Crystal Reed took medalist honors with a time of 17:19. LA City scored a team time of 1:55:14.

Lady Cubs season leader Veronica Alaniz was stellar in her performance around the 5K course in finishing 52nd with a time of 20:26. Alaniz’s time was enough to qualify her for the State Meet on Nov. 17 at Woodward Park in Fresno.

“All year she was our top runner and she showed her competitiveness in this Regional,” cited LA City head coach Sylvia Mosqueda. “The change in venue really affected us as we prepared hard for a totally different type of circuit. We weren’t the only team affected and it wasn’t anyone’s fault. Overall, however, when I reflected on our individual times and compared them to earlier meets this season, the Lady Cubs made drastic improvements. The program moved forward this year, and perhaps Veronica will be able to show well in representing LA City in the State meet.”

Rosa Altomstone was 139th overall (22:52) and the second LACC runner to finish. Izamar Serrano was close behind at 23:08 and 149th place.

Other Lady Cubs finishers included Adelina Lopez (162nd, 23:38) and Natalie Aguilar (196th, 25.07).
