LINUX– INSTALLATION & MAINTENANCE

Recently this Open Source Unix-like operating system has emerged as the main competition to Microsoft Windows. Linux has come a long way from its initial posting to the Internet by graduate student Linus Torvalds in 1991. Recently it has gained the support of industrial powerhouses such as Intel, IBM, Compaq, HP, Dell, Oracle, Netscape and Corel. This course will introduce you to the fundamentals of the Linux OS. We will cover installation and basic configurations, setting up the graphical user interface, X Windows, and will discuss dual booting with MS Windows. We will be connecting to the Internet, downloading and installing applications such as OpenOffice and the Apache web server. SERVING WEB & DATABASE APPLICATIONS ON LINUX

This class will construct a full e-commerce web application with shopping cart and inventory control that uses the MySQL database and HTML-generation language on a Linux Apache Web server. The course content will closely follow the book “Web Database Applications with PHP and MySQL”, 2nd edition by Williams & Lane. Purchase of book is strongly recommended, but not required. Each student will install the necessary additional package on a standard Linux installation, learn basic SQL database commands, learn basic PHP commands, and then learn about Apache Web server application interface that glues these together. L.A. COUNTY FOOD SERVICE / FOOD HANDLERS CERTIFICATION PROGRAM

The California Health and Safety Code and L.A. County Code/Ordinance 97-0071, requires mandatory Food Handler certification for managers/operators and/or other responsible parties of all restaurants, markets, mobile food preparation units, commissaries and food processing establishments. One certified food handler is required to be present during all hours of operation. This ordinance went into effect January 1999. Now is the time to get certified to protect your business and profession as a food service provider. It’s not too late! L.A. County mandated exam, study sheets and textbook classes are offered for a total of 8 hours each and approved by the American Culinary Federation and L.A. County Health Department. A basic step by step instruction to fundamental cake decorating. This course is designed exclusively for the first time decorator. Course outline covers the basic skills of color mixing, borders, tool description, basic rose, simple floral arrangement and figure piping. A good course for the career oriented or hobbyist. Students must attend all 4 meetings to get all cake decorating techniques described above - there will be no class make-up. Material fee of $25 to be paid to instructor on 1st meeting of class.
