In order to meet the standards of our accreditation, the ACCJC recommends that we “develop a robust and comprehensive professional development program to both enhance institutional effectiveness practices and promote institutional engagement by all employee groups.” (Recommendation #2 from the ACCJC Evaluation Report)

As part of our objectives and strategies in response to the ACCJC recommendation concerning professional development, the Staff and Organizational Development Plan enhances institutional effectiveness practices through alignment with existing campus plans.
Staff and Organizational Development committee membership (specified in the Contract) is limited to 20, including 6 faculty members, 6 classified employees and 3 administrators. Additional members for this year include resources and those who volunteered to work specifically on accreditation.
Meetings are the second and fourth Tuesday of each month from 3:30-4:30pm in CH-206.
Subcommittees include Book Program, Employee Recognition Program, Classified Staff, Mandatory Flex Day, Professional Growth, New Faculty Academy, S&OD Plan, and Website Management.

As part of our objectives and strategies in response to the ACCJC recommendation concerning professional development, the Staff and Organizational Development Committee will hold activities for faculty, classified staff, and administrators, thereby promoting institutional engagement by all employee groups. Brown Bag Lunches are held the second and fourth Thursday of each month, 12:30-1:30pm. Brown Bag Dinners are held the second and fourth Thursday of each month, 5:00-6:00pm.

Completed Professional Development/Flex Activities
Mandatory Flex Day: Full-time, Adjunct Faculty, Administration and Classified Staff participated in an all day workshop of Student Learning Outcomes (August 27, 2009).
Concert Series: Open to all employees and students for professional and personal enrichment. Offering over 30 opportunities to hear free music performances by professional and student musicians (Fall and Spring semesters).
Part-time Faculty Informational Day: All day workshop for Adjunct Faculty on campus update, Student Learning Outcomes, Professional Development and Contract (September 12, 2009).
New Faculty Academy: For the newly hired probationary faculty, designed as a four-year professional development workshop. The workshops are held twice a month during Fall and Spring semesters:
- Welcome & Informational Day
- The Tenure Review Process, Committee and Portfolio Creation
- E-Portfolio training to be used for Tenure Review and Student Learning
- Getty Museum Teacher Learning Day; “How to utilize the museum to improve Student Learning”
- Presentations from Personnel/Payroll supervisor and Teaching Learning Center supervisor
Workforce Education Professional Development Training: “StrengthQuest” Alex Davis, Dean of Workforce Education - For all employees and students to assess individual’s strengths to achieve better working/studying environment (October 9, 2009).
LACC Theatre Academy: "Raps", “Anton’s Uncle” & “Pride and Prejudice” – For all employees and students on campus for professional and personal enrichment (Fall 2009).
Brown Bag Lunch and Dinner: For all employees to learn and utilize the materials for their classrooms or offices. Presented twice a month during Fall and Spring semesters. The topics include:

Book Program: For all employees and students
- “The Soloist” by Steve Lopez – Open and Panel Discussions, Concerts, Readings, and visit by the author. English/ESL department incorporating the book for their classes (Fall and Spring semesters).
- As part of the ongoing discussion of Steve Lopez’s THE SOLOIST the LACC Book Program Committee presented “Understanding Mental Illness, The Challenges and The Resources: A Presentation and a Panel Discussion” featuring Amy Sweetman, Professor of Psychology on “What is Mental Illness?”, Monday, March 8, 2010, 12:10-1:45 pm
Classified Opening/Appreciation Day: For all Classified employees. Information and update on Accreditation, Campus Plan, Construction, ACT and welcome from the entire Administration (October 22, 2009).
E-Portfolio Training: For all faculty for Student Learning (October 23, 2009)
