LACC film student Steve Rudolf’s short film “The Exchange” has been selected to appear in the Hermosa Short Film Festival this weekend in Hermosa Beach. The five-minute film will screen at 1:20 p.m., Saturday, August 12, at the Hermosa Playhouse at 701 Pier Avenue. “I'm really excited,” said Mr. Rudolf, an Echo Park resident. “It's the first short I've had shown outside of the school, and I definitely wouldn't have been able to make it without the experiences I've had at LACC over the past year.” A beginning film student, he’s completed five classes at LACC, including the required four core classes and an advanced digital production workshop with professor Joni Varner. It was in Ms. Varner’s class that he produced this short feature, which was also screened in LACC’s end-of-the-year student film screenings. Currently employed in computer support at a law firm, Mr. Rudolf’s creative focus in the past few years has been on writing. He’d taken writing classes at the New School in New York and at UCLA extension and he’s written three film scripts. Enrolling in LACC’s film program and getting the experience of making five short films over the course of the school year, he said, has improved his writing. “I look back on my scripts and they read like plays,” he said. “Now I’ve learned how to write so that things can be expressed more visually on the screen.” Mr. Rudolf, 36, said he came to LACC as a result of “word of mouth” from friends. He said he liked LACC’s film program because it was very structured, well balanced, and because it gave him a broader knowledge of films. His film “The Exchange” is a light drama with comic moments about a couple who’ve recently broken up. The guy still has one of his ex’s earrings, and his one-time girl friend has his ski bibs. As they come together to tie up loose ends and return each other’s property, they re-evaluate their breakup and contemplate the possibility of a reconciliation. The
director shot his film over a one-week period using a Panasonic DVX-100
camera, running at 24 frames per second to give it a film look. The lead
actors were Clara York and Tim Durkin, individuals he’d worked with
before. Mr. Rudolf said he plans to continue his studies at LACC’s film
school this fall with a class in cinematography. He said he is also
planning to produce and direct a feature film script that he is currently
writing. #### |
