Inexpensive classes and free tutoring are offered to all LSC students who want to strengthen their abilities to think critically and independently, read analytically, write well, reason quantitatively, and study effectively while mastering course materials. Every semster, we offer classes and tutoring for over a hundred courses in our English and Math Labs. Instructors and tutors alike are trained to challenge as well as support students.

The Tutorial unit builds on the premise that critical thinking and intellectual independence are developed through questioning and dialogue. Most of our tutoring takes place in small group settings. This setting fosters discussion and allows students to listen to, grapple with, and articulate new and different perspectives. It enables students to work collaboratively, helping them to see that they can rely on classmates as well as tutors. Composition courses are tutored almost exclusively one-on-one and focus on the individual's own expression and understanding. We t writing as a process of ongoing revision, teaching students to critically evaluate and edit their own writing.

LSC Study Skills Resources
and Useful Web Sites

Study Skills Materials and Useful Web Sites
General Study Skills This site contains useful study skills materials - it addresses a wide range of topics, from notetaking to how to study for objective and multiple choice tests - as well as how to cope with common student problems like test anxiety and procrastination.
English Study Skills This portion of the site deals with concerns common to student writers - like taking in-class essay exams, essay organization, writer's block and the much avoided art of revision.
Academic Web sites This is an often updated collection of web sites that many students have found useful - and if not useful, then, at the very least, quite interesting. The sites are divided into specific categories such as English, Science, Math, History as well as more general categories like Career, Health, and general web resources (for those of you interested in building your own web pages).
