LA
PREP – A
INSTRUCTIONS
and DESCRIPTION SUMMER 2003
The Los Angeles Prefreshman Engineering Program (LA PREP) is
now in its seventh year. LA PREP is a series of summer college classes for
students currently in 7th through 10th grades. There are
no costs for first year students. Program dates are July 7 through
LA PREP is modeled after the very successful San Antonio
PREP, which was founded in 1979 by Dr. Manuel Berriozabal.
The program has had phenomenal success rates: 99.9% of past participants
graduated high school, 92% entered college. In 1996, NASA chose to expand the
program to 10 major cites throughout the country, including this one site in
LA PREP is open to achieving students only: students who – with a little help from us – are ready to take college courses. All applicants must have a GPA of 3.0 or higher, must be at or above grade level in Mathematics, and must have a B or higher in Mathematics. Returning students must also meet any additional prerequisites required for each course.
LA PREP makes NO attempt to compete with a student’s
regular school. Therefore we do not teach or re-teach subjects taught in school
such as arithmetic and pre-algebra. Instead, we assume students already possess
these skills; and can apply them in the study of logic, engineering,
electronics, problem solving and science. (Just as we do not teach writing, but
require all participants to have the ability to read and write.)
Level 1, First year students: There are NO costs to
first year students. First year students will take Programming Logic (CSIT
107), and Introduction to Electronics (Electronics 2). (These classes are open
only to participants in the program; participants will not be taking classes
with the general college population.)
In addition to the college classes, students will participate in tutoring,
seminars, problem solving, project competitions and field trips. Plus all
students will be assigned to a mentor/tutor. The mentors will lead the students
in his or her group from class to class and stay with the students the whole
time they are on campus.
First year students meet from
Returning students; Option 1: (Open classes. These classes include students from the general college population.) Nominal fees may be required by the college; however precollege students are NOT required to pay the “health fee” or the tuition of $11 per unit. Students must purchase necessary textbooks, but LA PREP will reimburse the purchase price of all required books upon successful completion of the program. LA PREP will provide tutoring and limited in-class assistance for those students in both Biology 25 and Astronomy 1. Students must register directly with the college. All applicants must meet the prerequisite skills required by the college for each course. This may involve taking the college placement tests for some students. These classes are open to the general college population, so seats will fill up quickly.
In addition to the courses
