Tutoring in Learning Skills Center

Hiring of each tutor

  • Each potential tutor takes a “Tutor Theory Class” to become a certified tutor in a certain discipline.
  • Potential tutors have their transcripts reviewed for grades “A” or “B” in their tutoring subject area.
  • Recommendations from professors are evaluated.

 Requesting tutoring

  • Each student has to show proof of being a member of TRIO or EOP&S
  • Student has to find out what areas of discipline are offered
  • Student can request 2, one hour private 1-on-1 appointments per subject, per semester
  • Walk-ins are available with limited time durations
  • Appointments are made in the front desk
  • No phone appointments, just phone cancellations (323) 953-4000 ext. 2770

 Tutoring sessions

  • Each student must have a tutoring folder made up for each subject, every semester which is referred to every time student comes in. (i.e. Student A can have multiple subject folders)
  • Tutors go through upcoming test preparation, review past test or quizzes, and review subject matter, but do not do any homework assignments.
  • Tutoring does not count towards any units.
  • The Learning Skills center monitors each student through a “progress report card”
