VA entitlement programs
Chapter 30, Montgomey G.I. Bill
The Montgomery GI Bill - Active Duty (Chapter 30) (also called "MGIB" or "MGIB-AD") is an education benefit that provides up to 36 months of full-time payments to eligible veterans and service members for approved education and training programs.
MGIB-AD (Chapter 30) may also be used to reimburse certain
VA-approved national tests and tests for licensure or certification.
Generally, benefits are payable for 10 years following release from active
duty.
Chapter 31, Vocational Rehabilitation and Employment Service
The Vocational Rehabilitation and Employment Service program provides support to veterans who have a service-connected disability. Eligible service members are entitled to educational and vocational counseling.
The program also
provides educational and vocational counseling benefits to eligible
dependent children of Vietnam veterans born with certain birth defects or
children of Vietnam or Korean veterans born with Spina Bifida.
Chapter 33, The Post-9/11 Veterans Educational Assistance Act of 2008
The Post - 9/11 GI Bill is a new education benefit program for individuals who served on active duty on or after September 11, 2001. Post-9/11 GI Bill benefits are payable for training pursued on or after August 1, 2009. No payments can be made under this program for training pursued before that date.
You may receive benefits for any approved program offered by a school in the United States that is authorized to grant an associate (or higher) degree. You may also receive benefits for tutorial assistance or up to $2,000 for the reimbursement of one licensing or certification test.
If you transferred to the Post-9/11 GI Bill from the Montgomery GI Bill – Active Duty, Montgomery GI Bill – Selected Reserves, or the Reserve Education Assistance Program, you may also receive Post-9/11 GI Bill benefits for flight training, apprenticeship or on-the-job training.
If you are a member of the Armed Forces on August 1, 2009, the Department
of Defense (DoD) may offer you the opportunity to transfer benefits to your
spouse or dependent children.
Dependents’ Educational Assistance (DEA) program provides education and training opportunities to eligible dependents of veterans who are permanently disabled due to a service-related condition, or who died while on active duty or as a result of a service related condition.
The program offers up to 45 months of
education benefits. These benefits may generally be used for degree and
certificate programs, apprenticeships, and on-the-job training. Chapter 35
recipients might also be eligible for a fee waiver through the “Cal-Vet”
program.
Chapter 1606, Montgomery G.I. Bill for Selected Reserve
The MGIB-SR program may be available to a member of the Selected Reserve. The Selected Reserve includes the Army Reserve, Navy Reserve, Air Force Reserve, Marine Corps Reserve and Coast Guard Reserve, and the Army National Guard and the Air National Guard.
This benefit may generally be used for degree and
certificate programs, flight training, apprenticeship/on-the-job training
and correspondence courses.
Chapter 1607, Reserve Educational Assistance Program (REAP)
Reserve Educational Assistance Program (REAP) is a new Department of Defense education benefit program designed to provide educational assistance to members of the Reserve components called or ordered to active duty in response to a war or national emergency (contingency operation) as declared by the President or Congress.
This new program makes certain reservists who were activated for at least
90 days after September 11, 2001 either eligible for education benefits or
eligible for increased benefits.
