News and Events for the week of April 29

Good Monday Morning:

May will ring in this week and it will be a busy one. All of our end of the year activities will be held as we celebrate the successes of our students. Let’s gear up for the last few weeks of this year and help our students successfully complete. Several of us will be attending the ACCJC accreditation training and information conference in San Francisco this week. Acting VP Alen Andriassian will be Acting President while Dr. Lancaster, Dr. Badaylan, Dr. Wanner and I are gone to the conference in San Francisco from Tuesday through Friday. We will all be checking email and be available by phone is we are needed.

Last Week
  • On Monday we had a celebration of Earth Day. It was a lot of fun. There were informational posters, gardening tips, edible insects, tests of your green IQ, calculating your carbon footprint, planting for the new community garden and the official opening of our new North “park.”
  • On Thursday, the Social Science department hosted “The Latino Question”, a conversation with authors: Armando Ibarra, PhD, University of Wisconsin, Madison; Rodolfo Torres, PhD, University of California, Irvine; and Alfredo Carlos, PhD, California State University, Long Beach. These authors conducted an empirically grounded study on Latino politics, culture and society.
  • The Music faculty of LACC will had their HAMC Faculty Evening Concert on Thursday evening.
  • Sexual Assault Awareness Month concluded the month’s activities with a double feature Movie Night last Friday of documentary films relevant to the topic of sexual assault: “Frat Boys” and “Rape in The Fields.”

Artist Lecture Series: George Rodriguez

The Visual and Media Arts department is hosting an Artist Lecture in it series on Tuesday, April 30th from 6 pm to 7:30 pm in CHEM3 (Chemistry Basement Lecture Hall). George Rodriguez has photographed multiple social worlds — a rare mix of Hollywood and Chicano L.A., film premieres and farm-worker strikes, album covers and street scenes, celebrity portraits and civil rights marches. Throughout the 1960s and 70s, Rodriguez, raised in South Los Angeles, led something of a double life as a photographer. He worked for film studios, record labels, and magazines like Tiger Beat while also photographing the social movements and protests that were exploding on the streets of Los Angeles and throughout the country: The East Los Angeles Walkouts, the Chicano Moratorium, and the United Farm Workers movement. He has created iconic photographs of Cesar Chavez, Michael Jackson, and Easy-E to name a few of his many subjects.
