News and Events for the week of February 25

Good Monday Morning:

As we enter our fourth week of Spring semester, the campus is busy with Black History Month events, our annual Mathematics competition and other activities. Students may begin to fall a little behind or may be having difficulty juggling everything. If you find yourself feeling this way, please visit with Academic Counseling or the Welcome Center for assistance. Also, please remember that late start classes begin April 8.

Pop-Up Food Bank

Our pop-up pantry, with fresh fruits and vegetables, as well as some other pre-packaged food items will be on campus today, Monday, 2/25 and Thursday, 2/28. Please keep an eye on social media for availability.

Registered Nursing: Student Information Session

Today, Monday 2/25 in SCI 111 from 4pm to 5pm, the Nursing Department will hold an information session for students wishing to begin the application process for the Nursing Program. Reservations are required, rsvp to bit.ly/laccnursing. The filing period for Fall 2019 applications will end on March 22.

Student Workshop

A student workshop on “How to Have a Positive Relationship with Your Professor” will be held on Tuesday 2/26 at 12:30pm in the Student Union Conference Room on the 2nd floor.

Black History Month Events

As Black History month winds down, here is what is coming up this week:

  • Tuesday 2/26, at 6:30pm, the ASG is having a Movie Night showing of “Hidden Figures” in the Student Union 3rd Floor.
  • Wednesday 2/27, at 12:30pm, the ASG is the calling all faculty, staff, and students to showcase their talents in an Open Mic event in the Student Union 3rd floor. Contact: lacc-asgpres@lacitycollege.edu or lacc-asgsaa@lacitycollege.edu in order to reserve a stage time.
  • Thursday 2/28, we are honored to have Dr. Melina Abdullah as a speaker in the Student Union, 3rd Floor at 12:30pm. Dr. Melina Abdullah is a Department Chair and professor at CSULA, she will be discussing the topic: What is Pan-Africanism? Hosted by the Genderversity Center.   • Thursday 2/28 at 1:30pm, the ASG Speech Contest will be held in the Student Union 3rd floor. Prizes will go to the top speeches. Come and join us to see our amazing students.
Energy Blitz Challenge

LA LGBT Center Housing Navigator

The LACC Genderversity and Multicultural Center is hosting a meeting again today (Monday 2/25) at 12noon for students to meet with the LA LGBT housing representative in AD 108. There will be information, resources and assistance for students in need of housing. Please email: multicultural@lacitycollege.edu for more information.

Artist Speaker Series

On Tuesday, 2/26, our second Artist Lecture will feature our very own Emeriti faculty member Raoul De la Sota. It’s free and open to the public, in Chem 3 from 6pm to 7:30pm.

LACC Hosts Mathematics Contest

This Friday, March 1, our Math Club will participate in the American Mathematical Association of Two-Year Colleges (AMATYC) Round II competition. LACC ranked second in the nation in Round 1 in fall.

This Saturday, March 2, we will host our annual Mathematics Contest. Over 300 middle and high school students are expected to attend with prizes including $1,600 for the top six students, several $4,000 scholarships to attend LACC full-time and $1,000 scholarships to attend LACC part-time while students are still in high school.

LACC’s 90th Anniversary Gala

Please mark your calendars for Tuesday, March 12, when we will be officially launching our 90th anniversary with our 2019 LACC Gala at the Beverly Wilshire Hotel. Herb Alpert and Lani Hall will be performing. The festivities begin at 6pm. Tickets for faculty, emeriti and staff are $225. For all others tickets are $450. The deadline to purchase Tribute Journal Ads is Thursday 2/28.  Please contact the LACC Foundation for more information.


As our plans for the celebration of our 90 years of institutional excellence begin to take shape, the enthusiasm for what we do continues to grow at this remarkable Los Angeles City College… The City’s College.
