News and Events for the week of September 3

This Week @ City

Good Tuesday Morning:

I hope you enjoyed a nice restful long weekend! We had quite a week last week. All of the work we have done to prepare for this fall’s classes paid off. All classes contained in our 2018-19 Guaranteed Course Offerings had students enrolled. This risk paid off. Students responded to our promise by enrolling in numbers larger than fall 2017. Our enrollment was up all week by 7%. We hope this number holds for us because that is a huge statement about what we can do when we work together for our students. This weekend marked the start of the second class for the full-time, fully online, Online Academy students. These students finished their first class on Friday, August 31. As we go forward into this second week of classes, if students are experiencing any problems, please send them to the Welcome Center in the Student Services building for help. The staff will triage their needs and get them into the right hands for the assistance they need.

Guided Pathways Kick-off

Today, Tuesday September 4, from 2pm to 4pm we will have a kick-off meeting for Guided Pathways in the Student Union 3rd Floor Multipurpose Room. We are bringing the campus community together to (re)vision the college so that students can complete their goals more quickly and easily. We will have pizza ice cream for you. All are invited. Come and learn about guided pathways…it is our work ahead this year and beyond.

STEM Pathways Program Welcome Day

Mark your calendars for the upcoming STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) Pathways Program Welcome Day to be held on Wednesday, September 5 in the Student Union, 3rd Floor Multipurpose Room from 11am to 12:30pm. Light snacks and refreshments will be served. Please encourage students to attend this event. Students can register for the STEM Pathways Welcome Day and find out more about our program at

Student Workshop: Becoming a Successful Student

As a college student, many of our students have demands on their time, such as: attending classes, studying, writing papers, and taking tests. On Wednesday, September 5, at 12:30pm, in the Student Union 2nd Floor Cub Room, the Health and Wellness/ Life Skills Center will be hosting a workshop for students. This workshop will cover scheduling, organizing, procrastination, and study habits. There will also be a component of de-stressing and relaxation. For more information, please contact Joe Exnowski

Ralph Bunche Scholars Program

LACC’s Ralph Bunche Scholars (RBS) program is recruiting new students in an effort to double the number of participants in our group this year, so we need your help! We want to reach as many motivated students who are serious about transferring to four-year universities as we can. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact the program at: or visit the RBS website at:

Faculty & Staff - LACCD Board of Trustees Meeting at LACC Wednesday (9/12)

The LACCD Board of Trustees meeting on Wednesday, September 12, will be held at LACC. The public meeting begins at 3pm. I hope you can attend and be recognized for your great work. We will be introducing everyone at the beginning of the meeting and later in the meeting we will have a presentation on the branding and marketing we have been doing and what we plan going forward. Please plan to wear your Believe-Achieve-Succeed shirt as a show of pride for City College. If you do not have a t-shirt, we still have some XL and XXL in my office.  We hope to have medium and large sizes later this week or early next week.

We are on the move. Together we will work to help our students believe…achieve…succeed. We are LACC…The City’s College.

Have a great week,

Mary Gallagher
