Call for Submissions: The Citadel 2021-22

The English/ESL Department at Los Angeles City College is now accepting submissions for its literary journal, The Citadel.

After two years in Covid19 limbo, we are emerging from our virtual sanctuaries to re-engage with our neighbors, friends, our kin on near and distant shores, once again enjoying a touch, a hug, a smile as we breathe anew. We have learned that asphyxia threatens not only from the crowned virus, but from dehumanizing racism and injustice. The Citadel 2021-22 seeks stories and poems to celebrate our renewed ability to exhale and/or fight for a more just future.

General Guidelines for all Submissions:

Submit online only by emailing your submissions to

Include a cover letter in your email that specifies title(s) of all submitted work(s), the author’s name, address, telephone number, email, and Student ID # if applicable. This information may be stated in the email itself.

Submissions are free for LACC students; $10 reading fee to the LACC Foundation for all others.

To pay the reading fee, visit and go to Donate. Look for “The Citadel” in the “Designation” drop-down menu and make your $10 donation. A PDF showing proof of payment/donation to the LACC Foundation is required for all submissions.

LACC students for whom the reading fee is waived must submit a pdf or image of their class schedule as proof of enrollment at any time during the 2021-22 academic year. Students are also required to provide a scan of their Student ID card. Names on the schedule and Student ID must match.

Anyone who does not follow the above submission guidelines is subject to disqualification.

Guidelines and Rules for Prose Submissions: 
  • No previously published work, including self-published work, may be submitted.
  • Work should be no longer than 15 double-spaced pages.
  • There are no restrictions on prose style or genre. Note: Screenplays/Plays do not qualify.
  • You may submit a separate piece for Fiction and Non-Fiction, but each would be considered a separate submission and thus require two reading fees.
Guidelines and Rules for Poetry Submissions:
  • No previously published work, including self-published work, may be submitted.
  • Poems should be no longer than 10 double-spaced pages.
  • There are no restrictions on the style or genre of the poem(s).
  • Limit of three poems per entrant.
