News and Events for the week of September 23

Happy Tuesday Morning:

It was a busy Monday filled with meetings so this message is being delivered on Tuesday this week.

I am hoping you are settled into this semester as we begin Week 5. Our new Vice President of Administrative Services James Reeves starts this morning. We will have a meet and greet next week on Monday early afternoon. More details to come. We have a busy week ahead. Keep up the great work with our students. 

Food for Thought Pop-up Food Pantry (Every Monday and Thursday)

Please be sure to let your students know that our Pop-up Food Pantry, located in front of the Student Union, distributes food from approximately 11am until 2:00pm every Monday and Thursday. Information on Food for Thought services can be found @lacitycollege on Instagram.

Mayor Garcetti to Give Away Laptops

On Tuesday, September 24, Los Angeles Mayor Garcetti will be handing out laptops to the LA College Promise Students in the Student Union, 3rd Floor Multipurpose Room,  beginning at 9am.

Student Workshop: How to Have a Good Relationship with Your Professor

On Tuesday, September 24, the Life Skills Center/Health and Wellness will host: “The Secret Power of Mindfulness”, a workshop to provide ideas on how to improve your relationship with yourself, your body, and your loved ones. VAMA Visiting Artist Lecture: Todd Gray

On Tuesday, September 24, The Visual & Media Arts Visiting Artist Lecture Series will feature LA artist Todd Gray. Gray works in photography, performance and sculpture. His most recent photo works are comprised of photographs gathered from his own archive and recontextualized via their juxtaposition with one another and the use of antique frames as a structuring device. The lecture will begin at 6pm in Chem 3 Lecture Hall.

LACC Intramural Basketball

LACC Intramural Basketball will be held Tuesday, September 24 and Friday, September 27 at 12noon in the Main Gym in the Kinesiology North Building.

Banking Information Workshop

On Thursday, September 26 at 9am, Noncredit Success Academies will host a banking information workshop. HomeStreet Bank will provide information about banking, loans, credit, mortgages, investing, insurance and Workplace Benefits. The event will be held in the Student Union, 3rd floor Multipurpose Room.

Chat with the Chancellor

Mark your calendars for Wednesday, October 2, when LACCD Chancellor Francisco Rodriguez will visit LACC to discuss the District’s current goals and future plans. The event will take place at 10:30am in the Herb Alpert Music Center, David Alpert Lecture Hall, Room 140.

Financial Aid is Now Faster and Easier

90th Anniversary Community Event

LACC’s Community Resource Fair will be held on Saturday, October 12, 2019, from 10am to 2pm. We will have a lot of activities for our community. Free health information and health screenings, information on employment opportunities, non-profit and community services, and presentations about LACC programs and classes. K-Earth 101 will be on campus providing music. Come and join us for the fun!

Carl Bernstein Lecture

On Sunday, October 27, the LACC Foundation has arranged for investigative journalist and author Carl Bernstein to kick off the inaugural Nick Beck Investigative Journalism Lecture Series. The event will take place in the Student Union Building, 3rd floor Multipurpose Room from 4pm to 5:30pm. We have reached capacity for student registration. Current LACC students can join the wait list by emailing cookh@lacitycollege.edu. General and VIP tickets are still available for purchase on the Foundation website, www.laccfoundation.org. VIP tickets include a meet and greet reception with Carl Bernstein.

For Faculy & Staff: Tech Expo

Faculty and staff are invited on Wednesday to join Office Depot, Viewsonic, Hewlett Packard, Extreme Networks, CyberPower, Ergotron, Promethean, and many more vendors as they highlight “Driving Student Success” on Wednesday, September 25 from 10am to 2pm in the Student Union, 3rd floor Multipurpose Room.  Learn about the latest trends in education technology, gain new insights, enjoy coffee, giveaways, lunch, and ice cream.

LACC Community Corner

Eon Reality visited our campus and I had the chance to test VR workforce training; this is an exciting opportunity for the college. We hosted the Tri-Hospital Homelessness Task Force last week to assist with the planning of support programs for our students and community. Thursday, employees from AT&T volunteered at the Food Pantry where they provided additional food and snacks for our students. Then on Friday, members from LACCD and LACC participated in the Poverty Prevention Summit Breaking the Cycle of Poverty: Defining Innovative & Equitable Strategies which brought together service providers, business leaders, employers, and educators for a day-long collaboration with the Housing + Community Investment Department. 


It has been a busy start to our 90th Anniversary year. I thank all of you for your commitment, hard work, and invaluable contributions.
