News and Events for the week of September 30

Good Monday Morning:

As we end the month of September and the weather cools, we are starting the sixth week of classes. If you have students who seem to be struggling, reach out to Counseling with their names so that we can contact those students and help them stay on track.

LACCD Board of Trustees Meeting at LACC on Wednesday October 2 at 3pm

The LACCD Board of Trustees will be at City on Wednesday, October 2, for its annual board meeting at LACC. This is a very special meeting for us because the Board will be doing a resolution honoring LACC for 90 years of excellence in education. We will have a cake in celebration. We hope you can join at 3pm in the Student Union 3rd floor multipurpose room to show our pride. I would love to see a packed room of LACC faculty, staff, administrators and students with your favorite LACC t-shirt on. Let’s show the Board that after 90 years, we can still help our students BELIEVE-ACHIEVE-SUCCEED.

Chat with the Chancellor

Please let your students know that this Wednesday, October 2, before the Board at 10:30am in the Herb Alpert Music Center, David Alpert Lecture Hall, Room 140, the LACCD Chancellor Francisco Rodriguez will have a “Chat with the Chancellor.” This is an opportunity for the Chancellor to update the faculty, students, and staff and for faculty, students, and staff to ask any questions.

Installation of the Rainbow Track

The rainbow track is being installed now. It should be ready by the end of next week. You can see it from the third floor of the Student Union. It is beautiful.

Evening Concert Series – Tom Rizzo

The Music department’s Fall Jazz 360 evening concert series feature Tom Rizzo tonight, Monday, September 30, at 7pm in the Herb & Lani Alpert Recital Hall (HAMC 210). Something great to do in lieu of Monday night football!

Food for Thought Pop-up Food Pantry (Every Monday and Thursday)

Our weekly Pop-up Food Pantry, located in front of the Student Union, is distributing food again this week from approximately 11am until 2:00pm every Monday and Thursday. Information on Food for Thought services can be found @lacitycollege on Instagram.

LA LGBT Center Housing Navigator

On Monday, September 30, any students can meet with an LA LGBT Center housing representative at 12noon in AD 108 to learn about resources and to assist students with housing. They are here to help all students in need of housing.

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month

On Tuesday, October 1, in the Main Quad at 12noon, the ASG is kicking off Breast Cancer Awareness Month with free pink ribbons, ice cream, and pink nail polish. There will be resources booths: Susan G. Komen Los Angeles County who provides funding for breast health services, breast cancer education and outreach in our Los Angeles County communities; LACC Health & Wellness Center; and LACC SNA (Student Nurse Association) conducting free blood pressure checks.

LACC Intramural Basketball

LACC Intramural Basketball will be held Tuesday, October 1 and Friday, October 4 at 12noon in the Main Gym in the Kinesiology North Building.

Theater Academy Presents: The Sandstorm

Stories from the front. 10 Marines. 10 Stories. The true life experience of the Iraqi invasion as told by veteran, Sean Huze. The play will begin Thursday, October 3, at 7pm in the The Caminito Theatre. It will show again on Friday evening, Saturday afternoon and evening, and then again next week on Thursday, Friday and Saturday. 

STEAM 2019 Expo

Our Umoja program is hosting this year’s STEAM 2019 Expo on Friday, October 4, 2019 from 10am until 3pm in front of the Student Union building. The STEAM Expo 2019 features interactive exhibits on electronics, arts, and robotics. Plus the STEAM Mobile on-site. The "Students Think" STEAM Expo powered by the National College Resource Foundation who provides interactive seminars, and hands on experiments to expose students to the wonderful world of science, technology, engineering, arts, and math. 90th Anniversary Community Event

Only two weeks away! LACC’s Community Resource Fair will be held on Saturday, October 12, 2019, from 10am to 2pm. There will be important information and events for our community: free health information and health screenings, information on employment opportunities, non-profit and community services, and presentations about LACC programs and classes. K-Earth 101 will be on campus providing music. I cannot wait to see our community come out and celebrate our 90th with us.

Carl Bernstein Lecture

On Sunday, October 27, at 4pm, the LACC Foundation has arranged for investigative journalist and author Carl Bernstein to kick off the inaugural Nick Beck Investigative Journalism Lecture Series. The event will take place in the Student Union Building, 3rd floor Multipurpose Room from 4pm to 5:30pm. We have reached capacity for student registration. Current LACC students can join the wait list by emailing General and VIP tickets are still available for purchase on the Foundation website, VIP tickets include a meet and greet reception with Carl Bernstein.

​For Faculty & Staff - Meet Vice President Administrative Services Reeves Today

Today, Monday, September 30, at 12:30 please join us in the Faculty and Staff Center to meet our new Vice President Administrative Services James “Jim” Reeves. We will have a light lunch and an opportunity to get to know VP Reeves.

LACC Community Corner

  • Mayor Garcetti was on campus to distribute laptops for LA College Promise.  
  • We met with Saban Community Clinic and they will be donating 1,000 Connect Kits to our Basic Needs program.
  • Our Tech Expo, sponsored by Office Depot, showcased the latest classroom technology, products, and services. We will definitely repeat this event again next year.
