Welcome to the LACC

Mathematics Department

Home of the National Math Champion in 2004, 2007, 2009, 2010, 2014, 2019

LACC’s Math Team has consistently placed in the top 6 out of around 200 colleges in the National American Mathematics Association of Two Year Colleges Competition (AMATYC) in recent years.

About Our Department

The LACC Mathematics Program offers courses ranging from Algebra to Ordinary Differential Equations, including Statistics. We currently offer an Associate of Arts degree in Mathematics and an Associate of Science degree for Transfer with an emphasis in Mathematics.

Math Department has 6 computer labs to support our students, faculty, and staff.

Our courses are offered in different sessions: 15-week semesters (Fall/Spring), 5-week Winter sessions, and 5-week and 8-week Summer sessions. Instructional modalities include in-person, hybrid, hyflex, online (synchronous and asynchronous) classes which meet from one to four days per week. Classes start early in the morning and finish in late evening to accommodate a variety of schedules.

The LACC Math Department encourages students to complete transfer-level course work within a year. We created supplemental support courses and offer tutoring service in the Pi-Shop Tutoring Center in FH 104 and online via Zoom. The tutoring support offered by the Pi-Shop has become crucial to the learning of science and mathematics and helping students to reach their academic goal, and the student success rates speak very highly for it. The vast majority of those who use the Pi-Shop pass their math classes, compared with a lower pass rate for those who take math classes but don’t use the Pi-Shop.

Other opportunities include math scholarships that are awarded each year, a nationally-ranked Math Club that meets on Fridays, and student employment in our tutoring and computer labs. The department also holds an annual Math Contest for junior and senior high school students every spring.
