Biographical Statement:

Professor Nate Light was appointed Assistant Professor of Music at Los Angeles City College in the Fall of 2015 after spending over a decade as a sought after professional bassist, session musician, and producer in the Los Angeles area. He teaches courses in music business, music technology, music theory, and music history, as well as applied bass lessons. Professor Light’s approach to music education emphasizes the development of real-world skills which will empower students to work in, and adapt to the ever-changing music industry.

Professor Light is currently the bassist for OC Ska legends, Save Ferris, and for GLEE star Matthew Morrison. His past performing and recording credits include artists as diverse as Jason Alexander, Bleu, Das Klown, The Diamond Light, Brad Ellis, The English Beat, Peter Erskine, The Fenians, Gregg Field, Free Flight, Mike Garson, Debbie Gibson, Joel Grey, Michael “Miguel” Happoldt, Hed P.E., The Janks, Rich Little, Jack Maness, Andrea Marcovicci, Ron McCurdy, Roy McCurdy, Bob Mintzer, Megan Mullally, Nick Offerman, Ikey Owens, Alan Pasqua, The Record Company, J.R. Rotem, and Rose’s Pawn Shop among others.

Professor Light has toured extensively throughout the U.S. and abroad and has appeared live on nationally televised shows including The Tonight Show, Good Morning America, The Today Show, The Talk, and The View. He’s also sidelined and performed on several TV shows including an appearance on the most recent season of Gilmore Girls on Netflix.

In addition to his career as a bassist, Light is a songwriter, producer, and self-proclaimed “guerilla engineer.” Having cut his teeth on analog portastudios and digital audio workstations since their inception, Light has become an expert at both desktop music production and obtaining professional results with a minimal setup. Out of his home studio, Light recently co-composed and produced two tracks for FOX’s The Bachelor, and produced an EP and 6 singles by L.A. indie rock favorites, The Janks. He has also scored, engineered, and produced numerous indie film scores and commercial tracks. Light is an Avid Certified Pro Tools User and is well-versed in Apple Logic Pro X.

Professor Light received his Bachelor of Music with a double major in Jazz Studies and Classical Performance from the University of Miami and Master of Music in Jazz Studies from the University of Southern California. He additionally studied audio recording at Long Beach City College and music at Humboldt State University. Light was previously an adjunct faculty member at Cypress College and has been guest lecturer at USC. He is a proud artist endorsee of G&L Musical Instruments, Gallien Krueger Amplification, and Reunion Blues gig bags.
