David Moyer

Dr. Moyer holds a Bachelor of Arts in Music Performance from the University of
California at Los Angeles, where he focused his studies on the baritone saxophone. He
went on to study at The Thornton School of Music at the University of Southern
California, where he earned Master of Music and Doctor of Musical Arts degrees in Jazz
Studies with an emphasis on music teaching and learning, music technology, community
music, and arts leadership. He has a Cleared California Single Subject teaching credential
from the post-bachelor music education program at California State University
With over a decade of experience teaching music in both K-12 and higher education
contexts, Dr. Moyer has a deep understanding of many educational settings. His teaching
and learning practice lies in the intersections of popular music and jazz pedagogy, wind
and orchestral ensemble direction, music technology, commercial music/music industry
studies, and community music, and the ways in which these junctions can affect positive
change. In addition to a well-rounded teaching practice, he maintains a dynamic career as
a performing and recording musician, multi-instrumentalist, composer, arranger,
producer, and band leader based in his hometown of Los Angeles.
Dr. Moyer is currently on faculty in the Music Department at Los Angeles City College,
where he directs the Wind Ensemble (Harmony Project) and teaches Jazz Improvisation.
He serves as Musical Director and Saxophone/Clarinet Instructor with The Harmony
Project, an El Sistema community music program whose mission is to provide high
quality free music instruction to underserved students. In addition to his work with LACC
and the Harmony Project, Dr. Moyer directs the Wind Ensemble at Crossroads School for
the Arts and Sciences in Santa Monica, CA, and served as Graduate Teaching Assistant
in the Music Industry program at USC’s Thornton School of Music.
As an internationally recognized saxophonist, Dr. Moyer has performed and toured with
influential artists including Tears For Fears, Father John Misty, The Gerald Wilson
Orhestra, Blake Mills, Cage The Elephant, Broken Bells, Noel Gallagher’s High Flying
Birds, Guru, Big Daddy Kane, DJ Premier, Mayer Hawthorne, Anthony Wilson, Karreim
Riggins, Jungle Fire, Breakestra, Dakah Hip Hop Orchestra, Sara Bareilles, Matt
Nathanson, and Spoon in addition to many more. Dr. Moyer’s robust sound, creative
arrangements, and unique approach to work in the studio can be heard on recordings by
both chart-topping mainstream artists and buzz-worthy indie acts. He has recorded on
multiple Grammy winning and Billboard #1 albums, and his sound has been heard by
millions of people worldwide.
