Cinema 2 Syllabus Information 

  • Cinema 2 is an introductory workshop in practical filmmaking. Each student will be responsible for making several individual short films in digital video. This course provides an introduction to the theory, terminology and operation of single camera video production, including composition and editing techniques, camera and recorder operation, portable lighting, audio control and basic editing. This course focuses on the aesthetics and fundamentals of storyboarding, producing, directing for location, single camera production as well as postproduction and exhibition. This class leads to LACC certificates in Cinema and Video Production.
  • Using the digital video production format, each student will make and submit three original cinema projects during the semester. This class is a practical, hands-on workshop; class time is generally devoted to equipment orientation, basic production methods, equipment & laboratory access, and the screening and evaluation of student films. Cinema 1, the lecture class on motion picture production, which meets on Zoom, and is also taught by Professor Varner, is strongly recommended as a supplement to Cinema 2. Although Cinema 1 & 2 can be taken together or separately, both are required of first semester majors - open to all other interested students.
  • Student Learning Outcomes: SLO 1: Produce digital video projects with picture, sound & editing. 
  SLO 2: Prepare preproduction storyboards & post production addition of titles & mixed soundtracks on two video projects. SLO 3: Instruct the student that as a communicator comes moral and ethical responsibility.
  • To complete enrollment in Cinema 2 it is the student’s responsibility to:
    • Register for the class properly and appear on school class list. 
  • To maintain eligibility in Cinema 2, the student must:
    • Turn in projects and preproduction in a timely manner. Attend Zoom meetings as much as possible or view recorded meetings.
  • To complete Cinema 2 with a passing grade, the student must:
  • Maintain enrollment and attendance. 
 Complete three (3) digital cinema projects, with slated outtake shots on projects #2 and #3. Screen all three of these projects during designated screening periods to the class.
  • Once a project is turned in to the teacher, no more changes are permitted. The project copy you turn in is the one screened and graded. (Mpeg4) .mp4 is the preferred format.
  • Complete and Post Videos on Class Discussions

  (Points: ~270-300=A, ~240-269=B, ~210-239=C, ~180-209=D, ~179 & Below=F)

  • The course grade depends on the total number of points earned during the semester. You must personally make and show to the class, during class zooms, three (3) cinema projects to pass this course. Each project carries points, and there are also points for submission of preproduction materials. Points will be lost due to missed due dates. All students on the roster after the last drop date, (fall semester: 05/09) who do not complete & submit all three projects, will receive a failing grade.

  • Attendance is requested on the Final meeting (5/27). You will be voting on your classmates’ projects during screenings.

  • According to LACC procedure a student can be excluded after 2 weeks of absences (missing discussions) from this class. In the event of illness or other circumstances beyond a student's control a student must notify the instructor by email or phone to keep from being dropped. A later meeting can determine if too much work or information has been missed to continue the class. 

  • If a student stops attending a class it is the student's responsibility to officially drop the class in order not to receive a failing grade at the end of the semester (can be done through the SIS Web portal). Disruptive behavior can result in the expulsion of the student from class. Consult the current LACC Academic Calendar for its information concerning Holidays, Drop Dates, etc.

Important! Drop Date Information

The deadline to drop without a “W” is the first day of Week 3 (of the semester), OR Sunday, February 21 for Spring 2021. If you must drop a course, drop before the specified deadline for dropping a class without a grade of "W." Dropping after Week 2 will result in a “W” on your transcript. Effective July 1, 2012 students will only have 3 attempts to pass a class. If a student gets a "W" or grade of "D", "F", “I”, or "NP" in a class, that will count as an attempt. A student's past record of course attempts district wide will also be considered. Therefore, before the end of Week 2 you should carefully consider if you can reasonably manage this course with the other factors in your life (e.g. work, family, course load). If you think you will not be able to complete this course with a C or better, drop by this date: Sunday, May 09 for Spring 2021. This is the last day to drop WITH a "W" grade. If you have any questions, email the teacher before that date. You may also see a counselor in the Counseling Center in the new LACC Student Services Building.

  • At the beginning of each primary semester the LACC Foundation has a textbook loan program. Pick up an application at the LACC Foundation Office: Online. Vouchers up to $350 for books will be given to qualifying students within the first two weeks of the semester.

  • The LACC Campus Child Development Center is an on-campus preschool and school-age program for children of LACC students. Priority is given to full-time (12 units) students. Children two-six up to 5 years of age are eligilable for the preschool program. An evening school-age childcare program is available for children from kindergarten through age 10. The location is directly behind the Communications building but we be virtual fall 2020. Contact the Center at 323-953-4000 ext. 2220.
  • LACC Extended Oppoprtunity Program is a specialy funded program for first time college students
  • LACC Ralph Bunche Scholars Program is a special program for LACC students who want to transfer to a four year college. The program provides money and special classes to help students transfer into the college of their dreams.
  • Get Microsoft Office™ for your computer as an LACCD student.
  • Get a semester long MTA U-Pass for students for Metro rides all semester.
  • Classroom Rules of Conduct: Violations of Academic Integrity include, but are not limited to, the following actions: cheating on an exam, plagiarism, working together on an assignment, paper or project when the instructor has specifically stated students should not do so, submitting the same term paper or project to more than one instructor, or allowing another individual to assume one's identity for the purpose of enhancing one's grade.
