Los Angeles City College offers two ESL (English as a Second Language) programs: Credit ESL and Non-Credit ESL. Please read the descriptions below to find the right fit for you.

Credit ESL

Students in Graduation Event

 

Credit ESL classes prepare students for academic studies and career advancement. Credit ESL can help you:

  • Develop academic skills needed for success in American college classrooms
  • Complete a two-year A.A. or A.S. degree at Los Angeles City College
  • Transfer to a four-year university or enter a graduate program
  • Earn college credit which can be transferred to CSU and UC schools
  • Obtain a certificate in a Career or Technical field 
  • Prepare for tests including the GED and the TOEFL 
  • Feel confident in your ability to effectively communicate in written and spoken English

Students enrolling in the Credit ESL Program may qualify for the following benefits:

Non-Credit ESL

Parents in Graduation Event
  • Many of our Non-Credit ESL students are working on their general English.
  • Improve overall English skills (reading, writing, listening, speaking)
  • Help with the language of daily life skills (citizenship, medical care, parent-teacher conferences, employment, etc.)
  • Help with understanding American culture, customs, and public services
  • Builds skills for Credit classes, GED classes, and Citizenship
  • Non-Credit ESL classes give grades (P/SP/NP) that can be used to earn vocational certificates for employment and careers
  • Non-Credit ESL courses are repeatable, open entry and open exit
  • No residency requirement
  • Free
