This Week @ City - May 31, 2023

May 31, 2023

By LACC

Good Tuesday afternoon,

I hope everyone had a restful Memorial Day weekend. We are exactly one week from graduation and this week is final exam week.

Upcoming Events

We have a couple of activities sponsored by the Race, Equity & Social Justice Center before the end of this semester. We are piloting a new monthly series called “Candid Convos” (short for conversations). Our first Candid Conversation is about race with Native American activist, public speaker, consultant, and author Mark Charles. This will be the first of a regular series of conversations we will hold at LACC on the topics of race and eradicating racism as an institution of higher learning. It will be held today at 3pm in the Dick Clark Studio at the Cinema/TV Department and will also be live streamed.

Our final event for May is “Action in Advocacy” with renowned author and speaker Dr. Joy DeGruy. Dr. DeGruy will join us on Wednesday, May 31 at 11:30 in the Student Union 3rd Floor multipurpose room to talk with us about the importance of advocacy as a means of making permanent changes. Social justice can only become a part of our fabric if we act to make the systemic changes needed. Lunch is included.

Retirement Celebration

My retirement celebration is this Thursday, June 1 at 11am in the central quad on campus. Join us for a celebration of our time together that includes Tommy’s hamburgers and Pink’s hot dogs.

The Citadel Literary Magazine

The Citadel 2023, LACC's literary magazine and anthology of the arts, seeks stories and poems to celebrate our resilience in the face of our era’s tempestuous times. Los Angeles is home to many communities, but what does belonging mean when our places of belonging are changing? Let’s affirm our belonging, let’s embrace our century’s existential challenges, and let’s testify! Submissions are due June 10.
