The Citadel

The English/ESL Department's annual literary journal, The Citadel.

The Citadel is a creative literary journal that is being revitalized by LACC’s English/ESL faculty; its last publication was in 2014. Throughout the years, it was expertly led under the advisement and leadership of Professor Sam Eisenstein before he retired in 2017. First published in 1962, and for the last 54 years of its publication, The Citadel has prided itself in highlighting students’ literary work in fiction, non-fiction and poetry. The Citadel will be an active journal featuring the creative works of LACC students. It will also involve the LACC community at-large, inviting the neighboring communities of Los Feliz, Hollywood, Koreatown, and Silverlake and beyond to publish their works, in the hopes of fostering a community in the literary arts.

The 2021-22 issue of The Citadel (Theme: Breathing Anew) was edited by the English/ESL department with an elected four-member editorial board of Professors Genevieve Patthey (editor-in-chief), Danielle Muller (prose editor), Andrea Cons-Diller (poetry editor), and Jeffrey Nishimura (department chair).

Theme: Testify about Belonging

The Citadel 2023 seeks stories and poems to celebrate our resilience in the face of our era’s tempestuous times.

Los Angeles is home to many communities, but what does belonging mean when our places of belonging are changing? This year, climate change brought snow to our valleys, hail to our deserts, a tornado to Montebello, and a springtime super-bloom, and it feels like our tempests are just getting started! Let’s affirm our belonging, let’s embrace our century’s existential challenges, and let’s testify!

DEADLINE: June 10, 2023
