The Citadel

The English/ESL Department's annual literary journal, The Citadel.

The Citadel is a creative literary journal that is being revitalized by LACC’s English/ESL faculty; its last publication was in 2014. Throughout the years, it was expertly led under the advisement and leadership of Professor Sam Eisenstein before he retired in 2017. First published in 1962, and for the last 52 years of its publication,The Citadel has prided itself in highlighting students’ literary work in fiction, non-fiction and poetry. The Citadel will be an active journal featuring the creative works of LACC students. It will also involve the LACC community at-large, inviting the neighboring communities of Los Feliz, Hollywood, Koreatown, and Silverlake and beyond to publish their works, in the hopes of fostering a community in the literary arts.

The 2020 issue of The Citadel was edited by the English/ESL department with an elected five-member editorial board of Professors Nadia Elahi (editor-in-chief), Danielle Muller (prose co-editor), Flavia Tamayo (poetry co-editor), Genevieve Patthey (poetry co-editor), and Jeffrey Nishimura.

Theme: Breathing Anew

After two years in Covid19 limbo, we are emerging from our virtual sanctuaries to re-engage with our neighbors, friends, our kin on near and distant shores, once again enjoying a touch, a hug, a smile as we breathe anew. We have learned that asphyxia threatens not only from the crowned virus, but from dehumanizing racism and injustice. The Citadel 2021-22 seeks stories and poems to celebrate our renewed ability to exhale and/or fight for a more just future.

For the 2021-22 issue of The Citadel, the elected four-member editorial board is comprised of Professors Genevieve Patthey(editor-in-chief), Danielle Muller (prose editor), Andrea Cons-Diller (poetry editor), and Jeffrey Nishimura (department chair).
